In the summer of 2005, our team of young Americans traveled to Cairo, Egypt with the hopes of creating a documentary film that gives a voice to those Sudanese refugees trapped in the city. The Sudanese have experienced incredible tragedy escaping the war in Sudan and traveling to Cairo. In this country of refuge, they are faced with even more challenges, struggles for resources, discrimination, and violence. In the midst of these difficulties, the film expresses how the Sudanese community holds on to their culture through art, dance, and education. During the last week of our stay, the beloved Southern Sudanese leader and recently appointed vice president, John Garang, was suddenly killed in a plane crash. When this occurred, we knew we had found our story as Garangs death provided a new level of hopelessness and uncertainty for Sudans future. Despite this road block, our team was continually inspired by the Sudanese communitys message of hope, perseverance, and faith.
We hope the film unveils the drapes of ignorance that keep the Sudanese a secret. The film allows the Sudanese to tell their stories themselves, and we share this with you because their voices are waiting to be heard. We hope the film will mobilize you into action, as it inspires you to keep their stories alive.
