About Me

Performing songwriter/pianist, and sometimes stage actor.
Here’s some of the cool stuff I’ve done. Hope you enjoy it. It’s not me. I actually speak in the first person mostly, and just returned from Paris where I was trying to do the same in French. Want to continue writing story-songs, in French. Besides, you can get fresh bread here anytime of the day, and there is no bad wine. Hope to return asap. So here ya go; shameless advertising...
His debut CD, CHRISTINE'S REFIGERATOR, created with Don Rosler (www.johnmargolis.com), garnered critcal attention and airplay on the Jonathan Schwartz show (WNYC/NPR) in New York, and XM Satellite radio.
The title track won the international songwriting association; Just Plain Folks' "2002 Song of the Year." The CD was also awarded "CD of the Year." Another song from the CD, "Tanta Belleza," is featured in the HBO/Cinemax documentary "The Kidnapping of Ingrid Bettencourt."
He's played, and/or sang with a variety of artists including; Tony Bennett, Brian Wilson, Joni Mitchell, Earl King, Bo Diddley, Bob Telson, Harlem Boys Choir, and did two national tours with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. He is featured vocalist on TSO's multi-platinum CD "Christmas Eve and Other Stories" on Atlantic Records. John recorded with Wynton Marsalis on Bob Telson and Lee Breuer's song "Show Me Your Face," for their CD, "Unreleased." He sang a duet with Astrud Gilberto for her latest release, "Jungle."
John plays the lead role of Rudi Cox oppositie Jevetta Steele in Percy Aldon & Bob Telson's musical "Bagdad Cafe" (based on the Oscar-nominated movie), which premiered in Barcelona in 2004 and completed it's 2nd successful tour of France in December 2006. He and Percy Adlon are planning the filming in France of a series of music videos of John's songs, and they'll continue touring with "Bagdad Cafe" in 2008. John performed in Mikel Rouses' modern opera, DENNIS CLEVELAND at Lincoln Center in 2003.
John's voice continues to be heard on TV commercials. He wrote and sang two campaigns played during last years' World Series and Superbowl. Please visit: www.newyorksingerscollective.com (click on John Margolis) to hear a bunch more sometimes pretty funny commercial stuff .

Listen for "Tanta Belleza" from "Christine's Refrigerator" in the HBO/Cinemax film "The Kidnapping of Ingrid Bettencourt"

******************** 12 Songs and the beginning of a great NEW American Songbook. ********************

"Christine's Refrigerator" by John Margolis, is a beautiful and original songbook that fully displays his talents as songwriter and producer, and John's gifts as a vocalist, arranger and pianist.

This CD is unique in sound and sensibility. There is a strong classical texture, with shades of influences that include Randy Newman, Tony Bennett, Stephen Foster, Francis Poulenc, Kurt Weill, Edith Piaf, Astor Piazzola, Frederic Chopin and Tom Waits.

"Christine's Refrigerator" has already garnered an impressive bandwagon of fans on NPR, who heard the "sneak preview" version on the "Jonathan Schwartz Show," and who also heard the title track featured on NPR's "All Things Considered" (as part of the Kitchen Sister's "Hidden Kitchens" series). Three songs from this CD have been prominently featured in films, and Showtime/HBO.
