America the Punchline is a feature-length documentary exploring how the world perceives America, using the international comedy circuit as a platform for the topic.
The documentary sends an American comedian (Eddie Ifft), who has been traveling the circuit and performing at comedy clubs in far-flung places for several years, on the road again. This time though, he travels with a camera crew, and attempts to uncover honest opinions about America throughout eleven diverse countries. Along the way, he asks the world’s citizens what they love or hate about America, what they could do without, what they wish they could emulate, and how their opinions came to be, but most importantly. What’s so funny?
Based on the jokes of international comics and the varied perspectives offered by authors, professors, social critics and everyday people on the street, the film becomes a social narrative of the global perception of America. The film begs to answer the question, has America become the punchline?
