Absolute statements can fall flat if they’re not a statement of fact, but it’s hard to dispute the following as anything but - the name Habebe is synonymous with house music in Brisbane. Since joining the late night scene some five years ago, the man known to his mother as Wal Gedeon has been sending the music he loves through the ears and bodies of club and festival goers alike week-in, week-out, in the process establishing himself as one of the hardest working major players in his home city’s rapidly expanding dance music landscape.
Habebe is one of a select few Brisbane DJs who garners as much respect from the underground clubbing fraternity as he does from the dance music mainstream, due in part to his upfront track selection and his unwavering dedication to the big room progressive sound he’s favoured since his early inroads into the scene in 2002. 2004 saw him take 12 months off from his Brisbane commitments to take up exclusive residencies at Gold Coast clubs Quest, Ambassee and Kink club nights, but that all changed when he won the local heat of the Heineken Thirst DJ competition in 2005, going on to compete in the national finals in Sydney.
This exposure lead to him securing his Saturday night residency at Brisbane superclub Family in 2005, and it is on this stage (or DJ booth as the case may be) where he has earnt his name the hard way – by supporting some of the biggest names in the business. “Without sounding cocky, I really plan to try and put on a better show than the international DJ’s that I get to play after,†Habebe told Time Off Magazine early in 2007, a challenge even more daunting than it sounds on paper when you consider the calibre of DJs he’s shared a mixer with.
From his very first night at Family supporting Richard F (“He was there screaming “yeah man, fuck yeah!†after nearly every mix so I had a pretty good start!†Habebe says) his list of support slots is like an international house music Who’s Who. Names like Roger Sanchez, Deep Dish, Dave Seaman, Thomas Schumacher, Steve Angello, Trentemoller and D.Ramirez cover the full spectrum of house music, and the challenge of trying to match the skill and style of these global heavyweights is something that continues to drive Habebe’s development as a DJ.
Rocking the Family Main Room on a regular basis is just one of the strings to his bow – his residency at Uber’s Whatever Wednesday has helped make that night the West End nightclub’s biggest drawcard, while his flair for co-ordinating fashion parties has seen him provide musical stylings for such reputable brands as Redbull, Louis Vuitton, Smirnoff, Heineken, General Pants, Universal Store and City Beach. Add to that festival appearances at Parklife, Summafieldayze and Good Vibrations and a slot on Triple J’s Mix-Up program and it’s little wonder that Habebe was voted 5 DJ in Qld in the 2006 ITM50 DJ Poll.
“I think confidence is something that the crowd really sees and responds to,†Habebe declares, and with that confidence on board it’s not surprising Habebe rocks any floor put before him.
