The Darcys are the cutting edge of masculinity. They are the new men. Men at home wherever it is they find themselves. They have been described as both a "Victorian Chit Lit Band" and a band for people who love beards. Both descriptions are equally True. They've opened fashion shows and swank art exhibitions. They've played empty bars save for the alcoholic regulars who curse them out between songs. They can wax poetic on the joys of Proust and P.G. Wodehouse and yet, their van will only start after multiple blows to the starter with their trusty hammer. They enjoy verbally sparring about Heidegger as much as they do wrasslin' in the snow after a Constantines show. Molson Stock Ale or a bottle of Veuve Cliquot? One of each please.
The Darcys are... well... they are what they are...
These young fellows met in in early 2006 at the University of King's College in Halifax, They progressed quickly from shows in campus bars to releasing their first EP "You, Me and the Light" at a packed Horseshoe Tavern. They took off across Eastern Canada, Ontario and Quebec on a series of shorter tours to get their feet wet and figure out just what it means to tour this country.
In June of 2007 the Darcys found themselves translating their newly discovered live sound on to their first LP in the Waterloo Children's Museum of Technology. A month later their homemade creation: Endless Water was mixed, mastered and on it's way out into the world. It was met with a warm critical reception. Exclaim! called it: "a stunning collection of songs" and Ben Rayner of the Toronto star described its sound as "Thom-Yorke-does-Crazy-Horse". The Darcys live shows are moving quickly from a sloppy, boozy, love fest to a tight and muscular, well arranged boozy love fest. Much of this can be attributed to the newest addition to the band, young gun, Mike LeRiche, who's dexterity ..boards, Guitar, Trumpet added another layer to the band's already full live sound.
In the first days of Summer 2008, the Darcys headlined an NXNE showcase at Sneaky Dee's. Clashmusic UK reviewed the show: "The last band of the evening were The Darcys. I've seen them play so many times and each time is different. This time though was unquestionably their best performance." Their live exploits didn't end after their triumphant show case at NXNE. In the fall of 2008, the band drove to both coast of this fair country, converting new fans along the way, and road testing songs that will make up the bulk of their second LP (due in Fall of 2009). Right now, The Darcys are hard at work putting the finishing touches on their first 7" single (due out in April) and practicing and prepping for their upcoming Spring tour, which will see the band take their traveling circus to both coasts.
The Darcys sound distantly familiar, or familiarly distant. They sound like a shoe-gazing-pop band covering your dad's record collection or like a Wilco cover band on steroids. A young R.E.M. tumbling through Pavementesque epics. No, actually they sound like Blue Rodeo masquerading as Broken Social Scene and trying to get a handle on just how to use these delay pedals.
Yep. Things are Looking up for these young men.
