The Rise And Fall Of The Rockets

About Me

The band formed as a personal necessity, to perform and communicate these songs; to have something pure and true to combat the 9 to 5 slog; to shout something unique; to do something for themselves. Making songs they know they will like. The shows are fiery, shambolic and fun. The need to do this is ferocious and consuming. The songs are informed by our lives and the city; the office and the pub; struggle and redemption. Sometimes its just a matter of knowing which side you are on, and then getting on with it.

Band Members: The Rise and Fall of The Rockets are:Philip Dixon - guitars and voice/ Matt Bennett - keys and voice/ Matthew Harrison - guitars and voice/ Louis Smith - bass/ the Expanding Man (of where are they now?) - drums.
Influences: It is customary, of course, for the band to cram themselves into a creative box and list influences, for what its worth. Let us say: we want and love music involving guitars and bass and drums and pianos and shouts and harmonies and emotions and knowledge and humour. But I'm doing nothing better today so I'm going to do a big list of stuff that I like ('I' being Philip), for nothing except to dupe people into visiting our site while searcing for music similar to what they know and love. Cynical, I know.In nearly alphabetical order then: 10cc - Arcade Fire - ABBA - Arctic Monkeys - ABC - Beach Boys - Beatles - David Bowie - Byrds - Blur - Belle And Sebastian - Bonzo Dog Do Dah Band - Billy Bragg - Billy Ruffian - Chuck Berry - Big Star - Birthday Party - Buzzcocks - Ben Folds Five - Brian Jonestown Massacre - Boomtown Rats - Bonnie Prince Billy - C86 - Crystals - Clash - CSS - Elvis Costello - Johnny Cash - Julian Cope - Eddie Cochrane -Coral - Cramps - Chameleons - Cherry Gohst - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Death From Above 1979 - Dears - Devo - Dexys Midight Runners - Bob Dylan - Nick Drake - Damned - Ian Dury & The Blockheads - Divine Comedy - Echo & The Bunnymen - Fall - Flaming Lips - Fun Boy Three - Hold Steady - Housemartins - Hollies - Joy Division - Jesus And Mary Chain - Jerry Lee Lewis- Kings Of Leon - Kinks - Libertines - La's - Low - Love - Led Zeppelin - Misfits - Motorhead - Monkees - Madness - Mogwai - My Bloody Valentine - Magic Numbers - Morrissey - New York Dolls - Jim Noir - Elvis Presley - Pulp - Pavement - Pixies - Public Image Ltd - Pfunk - Queen - Ramones - Rolling Stones - REM - Otis Redding - Jonathan Richmond & The Modern Lovers - Lou Reed - Ronnettes - Sham 69 - Sweet - Simon & Garfunkel - Phil Spector - Patti Smith - Dusty Springfield - System Of A Down - Slayer - Stooges - Bruce Springsteen - Specials - Suede - Sex Pistols - Strokes - Supper Furry Animals - Sparks - Smiths - Elliot Smith - Sonic Youth - Spinto Band - Tindersticks - The The - Teardrop Explodes - Television - Turbonegro - Teenage Fanclub - Talking Heads - Velvet Underground - Voilent Femmes - Scott Walker - Jackie Wilson - Who - White Stripes - Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Warren Zevon and a host of 50's- 00's one hit wonders and oddities.
Sounds Like: Shambolic Indie Rockabilly Prog Punk.See the above influences for some easy reference points, but a purely random selection from the rock/pop A-Z section in your local record exchange would probably do just as well.

Slip-Matt

It seems that some controversy surrounds the inclusion on the site of my happy hardcore/euro-pap re-imagining of "The Present Tense". Normally the song is played in a beatific 6/8 time signature&but n...

The Aftershow at Moho Live Friday 25 January

The Rockets return to the Aftershow! Unfortunately we are on first this time round, but on a better note (Eb), the night has moved to a Friday in the Northern Quarter. Infinitely preferable to a disma...

Danny McNamara rang my mobile phone for a chit-chat

As I was trudging back to my car (Astra 1.6 "Club" edition, two careful owners) from work on Wednesday night, wind-cheater wrapped tightly across my shoulders to ward off the encroaching chill of autu...

It seems that it is three months since the last entry in the Rockets blog. Pathetic, I know. Blogs have a tendency to follow this trajectory: a brief flurry of well-meaning activity in the beginning, ...

Sounds from The Other City - review?

So far I've read two reviews of the festival in Salford and thus far not even a mention of The Rise and Fall of The Rockets. I think all the reviewers must have been elsewhere whilst we were on, which...
