Sean Foran is an Australian pianist/composer, primarily known for his work with the Australian trio MISINTERPROTATO. He is currently based in Brisbane, Australia.
A graduate from the QLD Conservatorium he has studied primarily with Louise Denson In Brisbane and Andrea Keller in Melbourne. In 2005 he attended the Banff Centre for the Arts Jazz and improvised music program studying with artists such as Dave Douglas, Vijay Iyer, Don Byron and Mark Dresser.
His performance credits include, the Wangaratta Jazz festival, Melbourne Jazz festival, Calgary Jazz Festival Canada, Kutchan Jazz festival Japan, JZ Bratz Tokyo, Woodford Folk Festival and many others.
His music can be heard on 4 recordings with Misinterprotato, "Now for the Free", "In is In" the live EP "Delay" and the new recording "VARIATIONS"
Sean also co-wrote and arranged tracks on the Megan Washington/Sean Foran release "Nightlight" - www.myspace.com/meganwashington. The album won the Bell Award for Jazz Vocal album of the year in 2007.
In the UK Sean works with the FORAN/BENNETT/HENRICKX TRIO. The trio explores works of written by Sean and perform around the UK. Notably the Pizza Express jazz club Soho and Birmingham Jazz Festival.
In 2008 the trio VEHERE with Norwegian Vocalist Kari Nergaard Bleivik and Belgian Clarinetist Joachim Badenhorst was formed. The trio will release a debut record in late 2009 and tour Australia in Dec 2009.
In 2006 Sean was the winner of the QMusic Jazz work of the year. He also won the award in 2008.
In 2007 Sean was awarded the Brisbane Lord Mayors Emerging Artist Fellowship and funding from the Ian Potter Cultural Trust and moved to Leeds, UK to study Masters in jazz Performance at the Leeds College of Music. He was lucky enough to study with ECM legend John Taylor, leeds based pianists Matthew Bourne and Mark Donlon, and Lars Jansson in Sweden.
In 2009 he was awarded the APRA Professional Development Award Jazz.
