Unsung Heroes

Looking for African-American Veterans to Interview

About Me

I am the Project Coordinator for the Unsung Heroes Living History Project, a nationwide project which pays tribute to and honors the legacy of the African-American veteran. The "Unsung Heroes Living History Project" initially was in book form. The concept formed after I learned my grandmother was a "Riveter" in the Brooklyn Shipyards during WWII. After discovering this, I wanted to learn more about blacks in the military. Unfortunately, there not enough books to enlighten present and future generations of what African-Americans did during the wartime efforts. I thought that was insulting to those who served. "Unsung Heroes" is now a 501(c)3 organization. The reason: I didn't want to leave out any of the experiences of the veterans, so I am including every contribution that is given. The project also started interviewing World War vets and their families; now, it is open to ALL veterans of color and their families who would like to share their experiences, pictures and accounts. "Unsung Heroes" has been in the news, being featured in the Sacramento Observer, Sacramento News and Review and on radio (WHAT-AM; Philadelphia, V101-FM; Sacramento and www.artistfirst.com)I am incorporating elementary, junior high and high school students in this project by teaching interviewing skills, storyboard development and how to use computerized editing software to produce a mini-documentary of each veteran interviewed. If you know of someone who would like to participate in the project, please contact me either by e-mail or by phone at (916) 821-7017.
