As a young boy growing up in a very musical family, up and coming singer songwriter/producer Emerson Palmer Brooks (Just.) was given the opportunity to listen to many different styles of music and to really explore and appreciate what was out there - Joni Mitchell, Common, A Tribe Called Quest, James Taylor (the original jt) R. Kelly, Donell Jones, Marvin Gaye, Brian McKnight and Lauryn Hill are a few examples of some of his influences.
He connected with his vocals at a very young age though the likes of choirs, school assembly's and also doing backup vocals in a family jazz band. As time moved on Emerson became curious and started to experiment with top 40/underground rnb and soul instrumentals. "I remember the first song i wrote and took seriously was when i was 11. My grandmother who was like a second mother to me passed away and the emotion that came out of the song was like nothing i've ever expressed...right there i knew this is what i want to do". At the age of 16 using software like Cool Edit Pro and after close to one hundred recorded vocal tracks over other artists instrumentals, he decided he really wanted to start creating his own beats and to start producing his own music.
A family decision in late 2005 led them to build a small studio in the basement of their home which included Pro Tools and Reason..two main ingredients to success all over the industry today. Ranging from RnB & Soul, Hip Hop, Pop, Acoustic & Reggae..He has now a library of ear catching beats close to 500, A full length 14 song album (See What I See, 2007) another 40 in which he has recorded original songs over. He has written songs for many established artists in the industry ex. Letoya Luckett and many up and coming promising acts. And Last but not least he is producing the new feelgood Hip Hop & RnB act "The Press Play Lifestyle Group" which consists of 2 singers (Just, & Jmore) and three Mc's (Brelynd, C.jay, & K Flo)
Music has always been something Emerson has related his life to and has influenced him to keep working at what he has been doing. In his stacks of lined paper there is a different story or emotion towards whats going on in the world; from Hurricane Katrina to complex feelings in relationships, theres just a good variety of written material.
