About Me

But enough about you, let's talk about me. No, seriously, thanks for checking out my MySpace page and in advance for reading on.
I'm a singer, songwriter and music producer based out of Philadelphia, of all places. I've formed several noteworthy rock bands (X's + O's, Head, and Superstatic. - toured, signed, blah, blah.had fun.or something close to it!), and now doing the solo thang, which I'm lovin'.
a|i|r records has just released my newest CD, "The Gladhouse" (acoustic based with chamber orchestra accompaniment) and will release my next one "Echoplexed" (back to the electric) very soon.
The Gladhouse is an acoustic based record with incredible string arrangements by Jon Cooper. Recorded mostly live, with "The Gladhouse" I wanted to just make something beautiful (I know that sounds a little twee but it's true). I wanted to make something intense and dramatic, vibey, where you can almost hear the musicians breath and connect between them - kinda old school, tune based but with a mood.
I've made a lot of records trying to be "your everything," but most of my favorite records were ones that really required something of me as a listener. They weren't trying to be my everything, they were trying to be very specific. Know what I mean? Not a record you pop on at any given moment of your day, they're a mood and bring you close to them.
"Echoplexed" was produced by Steve Durkee (Prince, Rage Against the Machine, Buckcherry, Paul McCartney and AIR) and is my attempt to redefine subtlety and visceral beauty at 160 decibels. Think of it as a tuneful blast furnace; of hope in the face of insurmountable odds. It was actually recorded before "The Gladhouse" but the order of releases just worked out this way.
I met Steve when I was recording at Prince's Paisley Park studio with X's+O's and he was Prince's engineer and procurer of the snacks in Prince's locked cabinet in the kitchen. Obviously a fast friendship ensued. We went on to make Head's "Flinty Loam" on location in a remote beach house on the Chesapeake (I returned there for The Gladhouse too). As a producer myself it was great having such and incredible talent .berate me constantly! No, very inspirational and we're great friends.
Right now I'm working on my next CD, tentatively called "Louder Than Red" or "Sugar Glider" or "Standalone Player" depending on the day. I'm trying to do this while at the same time producing for a lot of truly exciting bands and artists, so it goes slowly. More news than you probably want is on my home site derekchafin.com
I'm on Myspace to share my music and to meet new friends. It is refreshing to find so many creative people gathering and connecting with one another. Thanks for dropping by!

Don't have my CD's yet? They're available at my shows, or you can order them direct from a|i|r Records . - and also available at ITunes.com, amazon.com, and cdbaby.com.
