1) The art of using language effectively and persuasively.
2) Skill in the use of the English language.MC Rhetoric is one of many Drum'n'Bass MCs trying to make a name for himself on the big stage, we ask what sets him apart from the rest? ''I talk about real things which I guess people can relate to, I have not had an easy life and I try to reflect that in my lyrics'' explains the south London based MC ''I try to bring something different to the table because thats what I believe you need to succeed in this industry, a good MC knows what lyrics to use and when to use them, the structure of a tune and most importantly when to shut up!''. Born in 1983 only child to a Scottish father and an Irish mother Rhetoric was showing signs of a love of performance from a very young age ''I was often given the lead roll in my school plays, my teachers and my parents were very keen for me to go to acting school to hone my talent but me being the stubborn child I was point blank refused.''His musical influences whilst growing up were widely ranging and very eclectic ''My mum used to listen to anything from Irish folk music to Reggae'' laughs Rhetoric ''Apparently I used to love Jimmy Cliff & Bob Marley and would throw the toys from the pram when the music was turned off.'' He got into Jungle/DnB in 1999 purely by chance initially a Garage MC he attended The Best Of British in Bagleys in London but that was the night that he found out that Jungle was ''in my soul.'' ''I went to Bagleys with a few friends we spent the early part of the night in the Garage room, but me and my then girlfriend were separated so I went to look for her I found myself in the Drum arena and I jus stopped dead! I couldnt believe the vibes and the energy that were surrounding me in comparison to the Garage room, I had always liked DnB but never experienced it like this! Andy C & Skiba were tearing the place down and from that point on I was hooked!''.He then began to focus all of his energy in to his new found love at the beginning just MCing along with the MCs on the pirate radio stations & tape packs then progressing on to small house partys etc until 2001 when he was asked onto Londons Resist FM with Old friend DJ Dr D and MC Rockit (SKWIBZ). This is where Rhetoric & Skwibz formed their ongoing partnership but the station only lasted for around a year due to radio politics and the DTI. After the station closed Dr D hung up his headphones for the last time and MC Skwibz moved to Spain ''I was lost at this point having thought that I had put my foot on the long road the rug was pulled from underneath my feet, I was in limbo. No DJ no station & with no means of cutting a demo things werent looking good.'' Until a chance meeting in the street with old school friend DJ Search Warrant changed the situation. ''I was walking down the street and I heard my name being shouted I turned around and Search (then Fader) was standing there said he needed an MC for his radio show on Rampage FM that same evening, I went up we smacked it and then began my collaboration with Search Warrant which lasted around 2 years and took us from Rampage to Korrupt FM'' The inevitable happened and the stations closed more radio politics a lack of funding and the pirate radio owners best friend the DTI all had rolls to play in the demise of the stations ''It was sad, I loved pirate radio but I could see the future was in digital transmition so I began to turn my attention to internet radio.'' Rhetoric lost contact with Search Warrant and again found himself back to square one.He began searching the internet in an attempt to find a station that he felt was right for him ''I went through them all until I found www.drumnbassworldwide.co.uk I thought that this was the station for me but with no DJ it was a bit of a tall order to try and get a permanent show on there, I spoke to MC Safe D (large up!) who in turn got me up for a guest show with DJ captain DJ Phatwax & himself, we blew up the set, captain then put me in touch with Absynth & Skrapes who played on the station, they were looking for an MC and I was looking for a DJ! So I went around to their yard and auditioned so then we started working together Skwibz returned from Spain and we formed Vinyl Warning and the rest as they say is history''
Vinyl Warning disbanded in 2006 to concentrate on solo projects.Rhetoric has MC'd all over the UK most notably for Goldie, Andy C, Grooverider, Fresh, Logistics, Krust, Nicky Blackmarket, DJ Fluid & DJ Trevelyan (Undiluted, Fruit X)& with MC iC3.
