Rancour has, in its essence, existed since mid 2006. Originally started by Chris O’Rourke and some drunk guy he met in a Manchester metal nightclub (Dan Bradley), who started the band with no name, songs, money or idea of what the hell they were doing. Chris left after a few months due to outside commitments, leaving Dan to take hold of the reins and find a complete line up and get the band off the ground...a job few believed he was capable of, least of all Dan.
Going through an ever changing cycle of guitarists, many of them being fired for either being the wrong type of guitarist or for being plain ol’ shit. Dan began to lose focus until he recruited drummer; Luke Elwick, this got things back on track and Rancour’s first ever song was created; "Daemons", a song about the downward spiral into substance abuse and eventual salvation through death.
Dan was the sole song writer in the early days, due in part to the ever changing roster and Dan’s dictatorial demeanour.Dan wrote a number of the songs which are central to the set the band play today.
The band finally discovered the enigmatic Plant, who brought in fresh ideas and abstracted form of songwriting, similar to Dan’s own style. The band finally got down to some work and, in April 2007, Rancour found Leigh Davies, a suitable second guitarist for the band whose standard of guitar playing was not only good enough to keep up with the band, but also brought yet another style to add to the mixing pot.
After working hard, a full set was written and Rancour played their first ever gig on the 7th May 2007 at The Retro Bar in Manchester. Rancour took to the stage infront of 50+ people....when Rancour left the stage; there were no more than 7. That includes 2 barstaff, the promoter and the DJ...
In October 2007, Rancour and drummer Luke Elwick parted ways and later that month Chris O’Rourke rejoined the band and the line-up was complete once more, again with both founding members in the ranks, Rancour got into the comfort of writing as a unit.
Soon new and ever more technical songs were being written, played live and drilled into people’s heads, hearts and minds. Now the guys are making a name for themselves for their aggressive, yet melodic and intense style of playing and being one of the rising stars in the contemporary heavy metal scene, and (beyond all reason and belief) amassing a dedicated following, growing in numbers each and every day...I guess some people are just gluttons for punishment...
