I started taking photographs with a crappy Konika automatic camera about 20 years ago and I used to carry it everywhere with me until it was stolen in a bar in Madrid sometime around 1987. I was able to take a few pictures before it happened and captured many great live moments by bands like Lyres, Fleshtones, Fuzztones, Nomads and a few others between 1983 and 1987.
Around the same period I was also the brains behind NEW SCENE, the fanzine I was putting out during the mid 80s.
I did everything, from the writing, to the interviewing, the photographing, the editing, the lay-out. I was passionate!! The 4 issues of New scene featured bands like the Fleshtones, Lyres, Fuzztones, Vipers, Plimsouls, Pandoras, Crimson Shadows and a lot of other great 80s garage bands. Issue 5 was almost ready to go into print in 1987 but it never did due to lack of money. It featured interviews with Lyres, the Chesterfield Kings, the Prime Movers and the Cynics.
Besides being busy with New Scene I was also playing with a few garage bands, the most popular were the KLEPSTONES (we had a song on Greg Shaw's Battle of the Garages Vol 4 -on Voxx Records, a cover of Peter Greenberg's (of DMZ fame!) fabulous song "She'll Always Be Mine" and an original song on the French collection "When The Music's Over") and the VULCANS with my sister Kennie on bass, Javier "Bolido" Guttierez from Madrid on guitar and vocals and Ludo on drums. Our music was wild, straight-ahead brutal rock and roll and we poured our heart and soul into it.
I am now concentrating on photography and upgraded to a 70s Canon camera (and took photography classes in the meantime). I do mainly live photography, exclusively black&white of course!
Live photography is exciting and if you are lucky enough to click at the right second and get a beautiful picture then it is truly rewarding!
I mainly work in black and white because it gives the photos a timeless quality that is not easy to reproduce with color photography.
I do not do any retouching on my live pictures.
Live photography is not an exact science and most of the clubs have very poor lighting that's why my photos are not perfect but I like the fact that they are a true rendition of the event as it happened.
