Durant Wants Rematch In Flag Football Event By DAREK SHARP The Tampa TribunePublished: Apr 19, 2008 PLANT CITY - As made obvious by the 45-12 score, the Durant High Cougars were outplayed by Plant City. But the Cougars are badly in want of a rematch to prove the difference between the teams is not that great.Durant hopes for that opportunity at next week's District 10 flag football tournament. The Cougars enter with one loss on the season, albeit it the blowout against the Raiders."The girls really want a chance to play them again," Durant head coach Brad Brunson said. "All they've been talking about is 'We want Plant City again,' but first thing's first."First, Durant takes on third-seed Armwood at 6:15 p.m. Monday. The other district semifinal pits the Raiders, undefeated and top seed, against King High. The Plant City-King game should kick off about 7:30 p.m.Raider Stadium plays host to the event. Monday's winners are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday for the district championship and a trip to the state playoffs.The Cougars hope for a better result than in their last journey to Plant City's field. Durant could not stop Raider quarterback Qwet Shaw, and the Durant offense turned the ball over three times."All three of the turnovers set up a touchdown for them. If you take those away, the game is at least in the manageable range," Brunson said.Since the March 24 defeat, Durant managed itself much better on offense, winning its last four games to finish with a 7-1 mark. Plant City is 8-0.Quarterback Nadia Garbaj threw four interceptions in Durant's other contests, while compiling 21 touchdowns. Six receivers have at least 15 catches on the year."The premise of our offense has been to spread the ball around," Brunson said. "It keeps the defense honest because they can't just key on one person."Caitlin Dever has the most catches on the team with 57, and Kate Williamson holds the touchdown lead (seven) with Jessica Flowers (six) and Dever (five) right behind.On defense, Natalie Waterman, Mary-Helen Moran and Marlin Alfonso are near the top in flag pulls.Boca Raton is the ultimate destination for the Raiders and Cougars, the site of the flag football state semifinals.
