CROWN ETHER

About Me

Crown Ether (originally Subterraneans) formed in 2003 in the dingy streets of Sunderland, based around the musical nucleus of drummer Lindsey Rowell. When the band put out a myspace ad for a guitarist/bass-player, the were greeted one sunny Sunday by Phil Bailes, who had been attracted by the “hard to pigeon-hole” nature of the music that had greeted him on their myspace page. Though Phil himself still to this day is happiest channelling the early 90’s quiet/loud alternative music dynamic, his “everything from Abba to Zappa” mentality meant he slotted right into the band. With the departure of a singer and guitarist, Lindsey and Phil decided not to become another white stripes and began a rebuilding process that would find them their musical kindred spirits. Perez Bugby-Ainsworth, a multi-talented music teacher, was introduced via a mutual friend, and brought in to supply keys(and just about any other instrument to be fair!). Then when it looked like the long-winded search for a singer would reflect the cliché of many a fledgling band, they found Kirsty Walker, a self-confessed “psychedelic child of the sixties” who bowled them over with a recorded audition piece before even meeting up.Once ensconced in the studio , the band’s very different musical elements began to click together to form a potent compound. With Kirsty’s classic Grace Slick tinged vocals, Perez’s all encompassing musical atmospherics, Phil’s determination to write “something epic”, and Lindsey patent pending gothic surf style, Crown Ether represent a varied, yet focused musical picture; a sonic kaleidoscope if you will.

Sounds Like: 'ALTERNATIVE' is not very descriptive. We can't decide, here's a review, from the Music Rooms website."Checking www.myspace.com/crownether, the web address of opening act Crown Ether, a female fronted four-piece, shows a good range of songs. ‘Sweet Nothing’ opens with an acoustic guitar, joined by a slightly distorted vocal and building into distorted shuffling rhythm guitar contrasting nicely with melodic lead. It provides a nice backdrop to this tale of sleepless nights and paranoia with excellent atmospherics. ‘Harmony’ meanwhile is a paired-down punk number that grooves along steadily with clean rumbling bass lines behind fuzzy electric rhythm guitar involved in a call and response with sharp lead lines. Think Muse with the bass brought forward a little.‘Lost’ is a good example of melodic lead and intricate interplay between bass and guitar, grooving in The Black Keys style of swamp-blues-rock, while ‘What’s The Use’ is a storming rendition of The Dresden Dolls doing a Sex Pistols style romp."
