In 1894 the Dent Public School was opened for all grades kindergarten through 12th. The school was staffed with the finest teachers, cafeteria workers, and janitorial staff available.
Dent Public was immediately successful and thought highly of in the community. But in 1942 several students, known for their disruption in the classroom mysteriously vanished; last seen at the School. The Dent police began an investigation and came to the conclusion that they must be runaways. Three years later, in October of 1945, four students went missing. Local police were baffled as to the nature of the disappearances. Rumors began to spread that the vanishings had something to do with the school itself.
The school remained open but rumors continued about the missing kids. Then again in 1952 three more students disappeared. At that time students at Dent began to complain about a strange smell emanating from the basement. When Charlie the janitor was asked about the smell he claimed it was the sewage pipes backing up. After a couple weeks the smell subsided, but dark tales arose that Charlie was involved in the children's disappearances.
In October of 1955, seven more students vanished without a trace. During class students complained about a smell coming from the basement so repulsive it caused some of them to pass out. At the end of their tether, the Community rallied together and stormed Dent Public School. The angry mob burst through the large doors of the building and forced their way into the basement. They were shocked and horrified at the grisly nightmare before them, the answer to the disappearances.
The basement was strewn with the missing students' remains, all in varying states of decay. Bodies had been sealed in barrels, wedged behind the brick basement walls, and left in sanitary tubs to rot forever. A search for the Janitor went on for some time, but he was never found. The school was closed.
The old school house is now said to be haunted with the roaming spirits of the children slaughtered by the Janitor. Rumors are that Charlie came back after several years of Dent school house being closed. His body was never found, but his spirit is still said to clean the old building. The spirit is also said to scare off (or worse) local trespassers who try sneak a peek into his room in the basement.
