Atmospheric doom meddlers Noisome formed in Denver, Colorado in 2002 and lasted for about nine months. Nick Wojcik and Kory Grow had helped open a new location of a Colorado-based chain of record stores in 2000 and soon bonded over music ranging from Isis to Anthrax. Ex-Sistema Nervioso singer John Santos started at the store in 2001, and decided he wanted to start a stoner metal band with Nick (ex-Catheter, ex-Reform Control) who had recently left his band at the time, shooting for something in the vein of Eyehategod. Kory offered to play guitar. After playing together for a while, they realized that their music was more akin to British doom bands such as My Dying Bride and Anathema, but Santos’s screams added more of a hardcore/death metal quality to it. Their songs soon grew to epic lengths, some totaling over 20 minutes. They ended up playing only one show, on December 27, 2002 at the Bluebird in Denver, opening for prog-thrashers Cold Moon. In the new year, Santos decided to move to Seattle to start a new job, effectively ending the band. Soon after, Nick and his then fiancée Sarai moved to Seattle as well, but decided it was smarter to move to Oklahoma to attend school. Kory, who had graduated college a week before their show, moved to New York for an internship at a music magazine. They all still keep in touch, as well as with bassists Kyler Sturtz and Luke Goodhue.
Santos has gone on to design t-shirts for bands such as High On Fire and A Life Once Lost, and has worked on getting reunion shows together for his previous band Sistema Nervioso.
Nick is studying art history in school and still plays drums.
And Kory is an editor at CMJ magazine, and continues to write music with his girlfriend.
These songs were recorded at rehearsals and at Noisome’s one show. They were all recorded to cassette and later cleaned up. Previously only CDs owned by Kory, Santos and Nick, they show that band at their most raw, including mistakes and pleasant surprises.
