Well I am a pro hockey player and have been playing hockey since age 3 and that has been my entire life. Pretty fucked up huh? Moved away from home at 16 to Oregon, Ohio, just outside Toledo. Then to Marquette, Michigan. Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Omaha, Nebraska. Dallas, Texas. Springfield, Illinois. Traverse City, Michigan. Macon, Georgia. Asheville, North Carolina. Columbus, Georgia. Knoxville, Tennesee. Huntsville, Alabama. Orlando, Florida. So I have been around in the hockey world.
During the summers you can find me living in Canada for three months training and working as a hockey coach in Sundridge, Ontario. That is between North Bay and Huntsville, Ontario. It is a very good job since it keeps me on the ice for June through Septmeber.Other than that, I am pretty basic. I have a little off season job at a restaurant here in town, which is nice since it keeps a taste of the real world in my mouth. I really enjoy clocking in, not having thousands of people yelling at me, the news paper giving me shit, or some fan zone on the internet tearing me apart. All I know is that it is a lot less stress.With the rest of my life, I could not be happier. It may sound dumb and idiotic, but as soon as I sit in my Trailblazer on way to the rink all of my problems go away. It is like a drug for me. I have always been like that. When I was 15, and my father had a stroke just 2 days before I went to camp for a U.S. National team was when I noticed it. He told me to go to camp eventhough the doctors said the worst was comming. I went to camp and made the team. He told me I could do it and not worry about him, and ever since then I have been able to play through shit like that. I don't know why, but right when I close my car door, it is like a Jekyl and Hyde thing. Usually game day, I don't talk to anybody. It is the way I have always been since I was 5. Well that is what my parents tell me.During the season is a different story all together. Basically the "Rules of Society" do not apply to hockey players. We do things that some people frown on but hockey players don't even blink an eye or raise the blood pressure. It is just normal. During the offseason we don't miss the fame, the money, autographs while eating a meal, pics with fans, etc. We miss the boys, the locker room, storys from vets, storys from rookies, beauties on the team, road trips, basically the family. It is torn away from the final horn blow until training camp. By the way a hockey story has never been told about buddies from home, it is always with other players.It is my life, and it has been since I skated for the first time when I was two years old. Hockey players are not made, they are born. There are two types of hockey people, people that play hockey, and hockey players. That may sound dumb but it is true. By the way playing nothing but pick up or mens league does not make you a hockey player. You are a person that plays hockey. Also you don't know the game if you have not played. You may think you know the game, but you just know the rules, not the game. Basically a men's leaguer. A hockey player is everything from attitude, way of life, music you listen to, everything.
