Lakewood family marks site of daughter's death
A tear runs the length of Becky Archuleta's face as she talks about her daughter Melanie and how much she will be missed. Friends and family gathered on the corner of Union Boulevard and Kentucky Street to honor Melanie Archuleta, 20, who died in an auto accident Feb. 24. A sign now stands on the grounds of Green Mountain Elementary School asking for travelers to drive safely.
The family of Melanie Archuleta, who was killed after riding with an alleged drunken driver, hopes a marker commemorating her death will send a message about drunken driving and choosing one's company carefully.
Archuleta, a star soccer player and 2002 graduate of Lakewood High School, was riding in a car with her Wal-Mart coworker, Jonathan Threlkeld last February when the car careened off the road and stuck three trees. Archuleta was ejected from the car and died from her injuries.
Threlkeld allegedly admitted to consuming six beers before taking the wheel.
Last Tuesday, Archuleta's family gathered to memorialize her death with a Lakewood street sign cautioning motorists against drunken driving. The sign is the third of its kind erected in the city under a new traffic program.
"It's time to heal," said Becky Archuleta, Melanie's mother. "I don't know how I'll ever heal, but it helps to think of what kind of person she was."
Threlkeld remains in the Jefferson County Jail on a $12,000 bond. He is charged with vehicular homicide and awaits a preliminary hearing set for Friday, April 22, in Jefferson County Court.
Archuleta's family hoped a positive message sent to the community could be a bit of good to come out of a tragedy.
"I think it's a good way to send the message that drunk driving takes away kids," said Alicia Archuleta, Melanie's sister. "It can be one positive thing to come out of this, if people see this and get that message. I mean, it's one person at a time, right?"
