Somnolent has existed in some form or another since the early 00's, but did not receive its name until 2004. In that year, a self-recorded and released ambient album called "What Lies Behind" was completed, as well as a demo version of an album called "In Silent Light". In October of 2005, another self-recorded and released album entitled "Closer to the Circle" was completed, and in the same month two tracks by Somnolent appeared on the 2005 99x/10 sampler: "Nothing Concrete", which is currently available for sale online and on iTunes. An LP entitled "Deathless" was completed in October 2006.
In June of 2007 Somnolent moved from Connecticut to Olympia, Washington. While there, a new recording of previously unfinished pieces and rarities entitled "Lost Music" was completed. As of early 2008, Somnolent has been based out of Massachusetts and in the fall of that year released "Earthborn". Jay Felton plays digeridoo and Chris Beug plays violin on "Black Eyes in the Branches", and Jay Felton plays drums on "Wooden Winged" from that album.
Somnolent will soon be appearing on a compilation of Cure covers, entitled "The Rope is Long Enough", as part of the "Pink Pig" project.
