About Me
Imagine a mixture of melodic aptitude and uncut rhythm. That solution could then be labeled Dj Mav, for it is his ability to create mixes that stimulate the senses and satisfy the sonic appetites of listeners of all ethnicities, age groups and sexes. He began to experiment with music and sound in his Houston home around the age of seven. It was at that time that his mother purchased a four track cassette recorder and an electric drum set. The love of musical experimentation was realized at that moment. Always one for trying something different, hence the name Mav short for Maverick, he quickly made use of the new equipment and created songs featuring friends and family. During this time he discovered his fathers music collection and quickly began to expand his horizons into classic funk, r&B, and soul music, he was also guided by the musical tastes of his older brother, James. That guidance introduced Mav to the likes of rap pioneers like NWA, Too Short, Run DMC, Eric B and Rakim, and all of that era. It also introduced him to Dj Screw because his brother was an avid fan before it became mainstream. This was the foundation laid that would go on to create versatility in his mixes, but it was until Mav meet a new friend that he realized his passion for spinning and mixing. They meet in the sixth grade and were not the closes of friends. In fact it took the mediation of Mavs cousin, JR, to bring them together. At that time underground mixtapes featuring neighborhood locals were just forming, and he invited Mav to record on a few and the 3 Man Click was born. He also invited Mav to help Dj local house parties around northeast Houston or Northshore for those who know the city. It was then that Mav caught the mixing bug. Since he was a fan of music currently he had already amassed a significant musical catalogue, so at the tender age of sixteen he took his fathers cd player and his mother bought him another as well as a Gemini two channel mixer and began to practice chopping up songs. Now these were not djing cd players it was actually five disc carousel players, but he was able to work them as best as they could be worked. The lack of capabilities in the commercial cd players forced Mav to find a better solution to work out his creative side, so he spent his whole income tax refund and bought one of the first types of djing cd players, Numark CDN 24. Being that these were one of the earlier prototypes there was no working loop, scratching, or any of that. It was simply play, stop, and pitch control. He used those cd players to create remixes, mixtapes of all fashions, and dj parties as well. It did not take long for Mav to discover that true expression could only be found in the Technic 1200 direct drive turntable. He had experimented with them before with Dj Real but took an alternate route, but sooner than later he purchased a used pair and began to practice. During this time Mav continued to do local parties, school events, weddings. Around this time a high school friend of his named JB introduced Mav to Dj Larose. Mav was instantly intrigued by his mixing style and his ability to motivate club crowds. Over the years Larose and Mav developed a friendship that continues to thrive to this day and Larose became one of Mav's Dj critics. It was his initial critique that made Mav realize there was more to djing than simple mixing and scratching, so Mav took it upon himself to create music that is more than the normal expectancy. Nine years have passed since the true inception but it stills rings true like yesterday. Dj Mav has went on to do parties for the likes of LL Cool J and Cut Creator, spin at various clubs throughout the city and surrounding areas, spin before crowds of thousands, and continue to do it with the same spirit and enthusiasm as he began. Welcome to Mavs world.
