Sonny Cortez’s mother, Pamela Watts, sang back up for the Jackson Five at the early age of thirteen, which paved the way for a successful career in the music industry. She was the lead singer of the group Lovestory which was founded by Quin Harris. By the time she was twenty-five, she had worked alongside Hip Hop mogul Russell Simmons, Teddy Riley, Guy, LL Cool J, and many others, and opened the door for Sonny’s uncle and super-producer/songwriter Mark Cory Rooney, who has written and produced a long list of multi-platinum and diamond selling records that gigantically helped artists including Mariah Carey, Destiny’s Child, R. Kelly, Celine Deon, Mark Anthony, Toni Braxton, Jennifer Lopez, and countless others become sucessful, also creating television sitcoms such as Cory Rooney’s Born Too Diva and MTV’s The Shop, which was based on his own barbershop located in Jamaica Queens, New York. Other family members include cousins Kris Kellam, who has previously worked for Island Def Jam, Chaka Zulu, who is Ludacris’ manager, producer and Disturbing the Peace’s Co-Founder and Owner, & Tupac Shakur, who Sonny is said to have gotten his work ethic from. Also Sonny’s Godmother, Rhonda Cowan, who is Vice-President of Network Convergence and Music Development at BET.
Sonny Cortez was born on Friday, May 13, 1984, on Mother’s Day, in Jacoby Hospital in the Bronx borough of New York City. Not only was he a gift to his mother, but also a gift to the world. This great culture of Hip Hop was created in the Bronx, New York, as was his personality and being; therefore living the “Bronx Lifestyle†and its music had a great impact on him as an individual.
