Influences: This is one of my favorite debates - the genealogy of your musical influences. For instance: If Jimi Hendrix is your biggest influence then shouldn't Leo Fender and Les Paul be listed as well, or Andrés Segovia, or even Fernando Sor? What about the keyboard players? If Ben Folds gets you going then shouldn't you also note his idols in Jazz and Rock music, or Ignaz Bösendorfer, Ludwig Lenkfeld, Bach, or Bartolomeo Cristofori? Forget genre - should we all be required to cite Plainchant as a major musical influence? Even more ridiculous what about non musical influences? Should I list every person and experience I have ever encountered? Or is it adequate to say that Sam Cook, James Taylor, Ray Charles, Paul Simon, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Billy Holiday, and Stevie Wonder were the first musicians I ever heard playing on my parents' record player - and therefore had a profound impact on my playing? Is it safe to say that my father exposed me to music and that must make him my greatest influence, or that Kenny Kirkland and David Sancious are the two keyboard players I am currently listening to and emulating in hopes to continue to improve? This is why (in response to those who claimed that my previous entry in this field was a cop out) I hate this box.
Sounds Like: someone playing keys
