The Dune series will always be one of my favorites...The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan is also very good. Anything by Tad Williams is also worth reading. Recently read a few books by science fiction author Stephen Baxter which were pretty good if you just take his word that all the crazy shit they do is actually possible.
