Paul is an exceptional musical talent, his full frequency style and dextrous mixing talent bely subtle inticacies and a sophistication of rhythm and bass, at once driving and aggressive yet subtley hypnotic.
Paul’s music grabs you by both your cerebrum and your pelvis and goves you no choice. you will shake you booty thang. Somewhere between Pure Detroit, deep house, electro and breakbeat, Pauls passion for music clearly shines through in his performances. Paul started Djing from an early age, at 16 in ’88 he got his 1st residency with members of the hit man cru. Paul played deep Chicago acid and the respected UK warehouse sound, it was only a matter of time of becoming a technohead. Playing raves, warehouse
parties and local small clubs, his next UK break in 94 took him to Manchester’s ‘Acid Rock’ 808 state lurking in the background. Summer of 95 and Paul was offered a residency at the legendary Zenith Club Ibiza, when Zenith first kicked off. Paul was DJ who played every thing from Mills to greenvelvet to Robert hood, ‘ I think that’s why I got recognized because I played different to all the usual Ibiza Djs [plus I could mix!]’ Making his
home in Newcastle upon Tyne he became resident for Chunes, viva, Lunarand Fastbreeder. Paul set up his first label, Lunar records, an on going plan from years before. The set up of the label took paul on a french tour ending in Montpellier, headlining clubs, outdoor raves and radio gigs, {Paul became friends with The Youngsters, ‘Gil le Gamin’. ……….As the Lunar imprint wasn’t working Paul joined forces with long-time collaborator Suade and helped him set up his new label, Adapted Vinyl, working in the studio
for 2 years before the first e.p was ready in 98 and they formed fastbreeder. FB released the first 3 e.ps,
all receiving critical acclaim. With Adapted, Paul visited Midem 2000, meeting ectomorph, jeff mills and UR’s legendary Mad Mike of UR, in his own words, ‘that for me was the best part of my musical career’.
I sat a listened to everything they had to say. After Midem Paul visited the Miami Music Conference, there he managed to meet Stuart Walker, DJ T-1000, DJ Godfather, John from +8, Carl Cox & The Detroit Punas,
again learning all he could, and planning…… ………planning his new label, INSERT, a harder dirtier variant of Pauls style. The first release came out in 99 under the Bies moniker with Stuart Wright, Suibom’s first
release came out on Insert 2, described as, ‘so surgeonesque, it would make Gazza get down on hes knees and weep’. Vince Watson, owner of Bio Records & signed to Transmat, heard the suibom release on INS 2,
immediately approaching Paul for tracks and releasing him as Paul Smyth on Bio 6. Insert followed on with releases and Paul became involved with the setting up of Newcastle’s Fastbreeder night, named after
Paul & Suades act on adapted. The night held host to the likes of Oliver Ho, Stuart Walker, Mike Humphries, Female, USER, and Ian Void. Paul has carried on Djing & playing live at a variety of events, supporting
acts such as [Dave Clarke, Joey Beltram, Surgeon, The Youngsters, Ben Simms, inigo kennedy, female & many more].Paul started his new label called ‘Testin Out Records, which combines local
Artists and well-known Producers doing remixes. The first release features
Darkmode with remixes from Keith Tenniswood aka Radioactiveman & Suade (Adapted). Future releases will feature Elastic Trickery, Spanna & The Edgeman, Robert Burroughs, Suade, Chris Littlewood, Tokyoacidcru, Artwhore, Gamma & his own act suibom serum. At present Paul is still doing live sets, running a night called TEST & also part of Preamptive AV which has performed at the Cybersonic festival & has several dates next year.
