Let’s start with the name. Janai, (jan-eye) Chinese for “the one who lovesâ€. My mother was pregnant with me when she saw the movie The Inn if the Sixth Happiness starring Casablanca’s beauty Ingrid Bergman. The movie is based on the true story of Gladys Aylward, a former domestic turned missionary in China, best known for her work with children. She became a Chinese citizen in 1936 and around that time was given the name Jan-I, her Chinese name. Four years later, despite being in ill health herself, she shepherded over 100 children over the mountains to safety at the height of the Sino-Japanese war. After seeing this movie my mother made a decision that she would name me Janai, and decided to “spell it like it soundsâ€, that’s why there is a difference. I am truly honored to have such a meaningful name. You don’t find a lot of us Janai’s around.
Janai, the one who loves. It’s true and I can’t help it. Loving is who I am and what I do best. There is so much I love; Sunrise and sunsets, hiking to the very top (even if it takes all day), the feeling I get before I start to paint. A blank canvas eliciting a masterpiece – hopefully a masterpiece, the poetry of Shakespeare, music…its so great. Can I ever love a band more than The Dave Matthews Band? I highly doubt it. Their beats, Dave’s words…infectious, it gets in to the blood and your addicted. When you stand in the middle of warehouse fan’s and dance along with them, it’s an “orgy of the sensesâ€. (Sean’s words). GLASS, Otis Redding, The Temptations, Miles Davis, Etta James, and all the people who feel their music and put their soul into the music, I love it. How about the cool of the breeze than lifts off from the magnificent ocean just enough to cool you off from the warmth of the sun. Isn’t it great. And the sound of the ocean, so powerful but peaceful at the same time. The feeling of satisfaction from writing new music on my guitar. The warm summer nights looking up at a full moon and playing away. It’s my solace. But its even better when I play along with friends around a campfire. I love my friends. Each one has their amazing individuality that leaves us all with endless laughter and “good old times†stories. They are the good people, true friends, the ones that stay around forever, like family. With that…my family; two amazing parents and two crazy brothers that have never let me down and always make me smile. My husband, wonderful, talented, perfect for me in every possible way and I can never and will never get enough of him. It’s incredible how amazing he is. I suppose if this is about me I must mention how much I love food too. Cooking, baking, and biting into food. Thank you God for the simple pleasures in life. There are too many wonderful things in this world that shouldn’t be ignored but appreciated. I try to take it all in whenever possible, guitar on my lap, bloody mary to the right, friends nearby and adventure all around.***
