Miletich Fighting Systems

By far the IFL’s most dominant team thus far, Pat Miletich’s squad has rolled through some of the best in the league. The team trains together out of Miletich Fighting Systems in Iowa, an academy long-known for producing MMA champions. Miletich’s own fighting career was by no means insignificant, but his success as a coach is likely to be his legacy in the minds of fans.Perhaps no other camp in MMA has produced as many champions and top contenders as Pat Miletich’s Bettendorf, Iowa-based team. It started with a relatively small group of ex-wrestlers in the Midwest who worked together to adapt their game to the demands of MMA, and it has gone on to lead the evolution of the sport into every major organization on the planet.Miletich Fighting Systems has come to be known for their brutal training sessions, weeding out the weak and leaving only a determined core of disciplined fighters. Every year scores of young men make the pilgrimage to Iowa to train with MFS in the hopes of one day becoming world champions, though only a select few manage to succeed. Miletich wrestled and played football at Bettendorf High School. He is believed to have begun wrestling as early as the age of six. Miletich said he wanted to be a world champion in something and wrestling was something he was good at. Although Pat originally planned to pursue football after graduating high school, he would eventually choose to wrestle in junior college. Shortly thereafter, his mother became ill with heart problems. As a result, Pat left school to care for her. Pat has stated in past interviews that he actually began fighting to assist with paying her bills ............................................................ ............ ............................................................ ......... Pat started his MMA training at an age of 26. He had previously trained in Karate, kickboxing and boxing. Miletich was largely influenced in his boxing aspirations by his uncle, Johnny "Miller" Miletich. Johnny Miletich was a member of the U.S. boxing squad at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles and also fought professionally. Pat Miletich trained with Coach Alvino Peña at the Davenport Boxing Club. A friend from Chicago who refereed his kickboxing matches got him into a Renzo Gracie seminar. After training in BJJ for a year, the same friend then got him into the "Battle of the Masters", a MMA tournament held in Chicago 1n 1995. He continued fighting at smaller events and enjoyed success. He was undefeated through 15 fights before losing to Matt Hume. .. fights later Pat fought in UFC 16 and won the first UFC Lightweight Tournament. At UFC Brazil:Ultimate Brazil, Pat defeated Mikey Burnett to become the first UFC Lightweight (under 200 lbs) Champion. The UFC changed the weight class limits again in 2001 and Miletich became the champion of the new Welterweight division. Pat defended his title for the fifth time overall (first as welterweight) against Carlos Newton at UFC 31 and lost by submission. This was his first defeat in the UFC. His next fight was a KO win over Shonie Carter at UFC 32. After this fight, Pat moved up to the middleweight division. This was partly due to encouragement by UFC management and because his teammate Matt Hughes defeated Carlos Newton to win the UFC Welterweight Championship. Par returned to fight at his new weight at UFC 36 but lost quickly to Matt Linland. Miletich decided to take some time away from professional fighting and recover from numerous chronic injuries. Miletich has never formally retired. ................................................... .......................................... Miletich holds a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Shorei ryu Karate. He has spent the past month two hours south of the border in the wine valley of Ensenada, Mexico, getting kicked in the head by Paul Walker (Brian O’Connor from “Fast and the Furious” and Lance Harbor from “Varsity Blues”) and trying to surf when the long hours allowed it.......................................................... ............................................................ ...................“I play a crazy guy who’s after Paul Walker. What more can a person ask for in life … hanging out in Mexico, making a movie and surfing with Paul Walker? Paul’s actually a very good surfer. He joined Tim Sylvia’s corner last February in Las Vegas when he fought Andrei Arlovski and has kept in correspondence with the camp........................................................ ............................................................ .....“John’s a great person and he’s incredibly talented with a lot of creativity,” Miletich wrote. “He has also been very helpful with my difficulties in dealing with the pressures of doing this project and being worried about my fighters back home, who have big fights coming up.”...................................................... ............................................................ ....................One of those fights is Saturday in UFC 56: Full Force at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. That’s when Matt Hughes defends his welterweight championship against challenger Joe Riggs and Sam Hoger, from the first season of the reality show “The Ultimate Fighter,” fights Jeff Newton on the undercard................................................... .......................................................... .........................................................“ It’s very hard for me to communicate from where I am. We are on-set for long hours, and I don’t have access to phones on a constant basis,” Miletich wrote. “Matt and the other fighters have been training for so many years that it’s not a problem for them. Jens Pulver and the others have been helping the guys get ready for their fights, so I’m very confident they will be fine. I do wish I could be there for them. It’s a little difficult for me to be so far away at times like this. We’re like brothers.”................................................ ............................................................ ..............Other than the distance from home and life out of cell phone range, Miletich has enjoyed his first taste of the cinema.............................................. ............................................................ .....................“The first day of acting went well,” Miletich wrote early last week. “I got kicked in the head by Paul. What a great day!!! Rob, Rory and I were taking horse riding lessons from the stunt coordinator (Oct. 31). What a sight to see. It was some funny stuff. They are intense people, so we relate very well.”
