Having had the great misfortune of growing up in the cultural backwaters of High Wycombe and Hull, I finally fell on my feet in the joyful hub that is Bristol - a city motivated by cider and eyeball-rattling bass. College brought me this way over a decade ago and I've stayed ever since. I loves it.
These days I work freelance in music and event marketing and PR, which means my days are spent promoting things that really excite me. Just recently I’ve worked with world music festival WOMAD ; touareg blues kings Tinariwen ; Brazilian punk-chanteuse Cibelle ; musical mavericks Terrafolk ; the BEAP sessions at London's Bishopsgate Institute , which showcase a new generation of cutting edge musicians and composers; and various local club nights such as Bristol Hi-Fi .
I've dabbled in a bit of club promotion myself (together with my lovely boyfriend Mr Benn ) booking the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, The Unabombers, Mark Rae, Luke Vibert, The Nextmen, Dub Cartel Sound System, Fat City Recordings, Blood & Fire Sound System, DJ Derek and more for our night, Square One at the Thekla.
Our work on Square One bagged us the chance to programme Club WOMAD at the festival in 2006 and 2007. We had great fun booking some wicked global sounds: JSTAR and MC Honey Brown; The Heatwave with Quality Diamond and Yungun; Trojan Sound System with Brother Culture, Chuckie Banton, SuperFour and Top Cat; Mr Bongo DJs; Marcelo D2; DJ Patife with Cleveland Watkiss; Bonobo; Coldcut; Norman Jay; Russ Jones; Balkan Beat Box; DJ Shantel; Miles Cleret; Frédéric Galliano and Kuduro Sound System; Afrodisiac Sound System; Andy Smith; Hocus Pocus and Steinski.
We'll be doing some more programming for WOMAD in 2009, sorting the line-up for each evening of the festival in the Big Red Tent. Watch this space for updates and confirmations...
Square One has developed a bit over the past four years or so and although we no longer have the time to promote regular nights, it lives on strong-as-you-like as Square One Sound and now includes a record label, which is home to Mr Benn’s latest release ‘Long Time’.
