Don't you just hate trying to sum yourself up in a few paragraphs. For those who don't already know me, I'm Jonny, a kind of gothic/industrial/slightly deviant entity, currently living in East London (though some people call it Essex). Online, I'm probably best know as being the person behind EOL-Audio , a kind of personal archive of CD and live reviews, band profiles and various other music-related scribbling, although this project has been on hiatus since the end of 2006. Current indication is that it isn't coming back. I got so little out of it for so much work - recognition in this scene seems to rely more on powers of social manipulation, and I choose not to play. I'll just go back to being a fan of the music and leave the politics to those naive enough to think they've got something to gain. Or lose.
As one who regards the internet as a tool to support ones social life rather than a replacement for it, I meet up with friends wherever possible, be it a pub meet, meal (pretty much anything except sushi and all-veggie places), shopping trip, live concert, club night, musuem visit, RPG (I'm getting back into running D&D right now!), cinema or almost anything else that seems like a good idea at the time.
You may have seen me at Slimelight, Inferno or any other number of London 'scene' clubs. I also make a yearly exodus to Germany for the Wave-Gotik Treffen, and I'm often seen hastily moving between the various stages, trying to catch one more elusive live act. For several year up to and including 2006, I did M'era Luna as well, plus some other festivals on occasion, but I'm cutting down my festival schedule in the hope that I might travel to other countries to do stuff other than watching bands.
On a more serious side, I'm reading an increasing amount of political, social and religious critique. I am increasingly concerned about the effect of dogmatic organised religion on the world, as well as the growth of the 'nanny state' and simultaneous rise of the extreme right and self-righteous 'centre left', neither of which is the solution to the Thatcherite remants we call 'the government'.
That said, freedom of speech should include those views you do not agree with, so that they can be openly analysed and counter-arguments formed. Opposition to the BNP or Al Qaeda would be significantly easier if most of their critics really knew what they were talking about rather than ranting some idealistic spiel that you know full damn well your target audience wants to hear. The minefield of 'political correctness' isn't helping matters one bit. I'm a straight talker, and proud of it.
I am against campaigning for single issues without consideration for the bigger picture, and have a particular dislike for those laying claim to the 'moral high ground'. I am also opposed to groups like PETA, who rely on publicity stunts, shock tactics and naive 'celebrity' backing to transmit their hopelessly one-sided arguments, then demonising all who voice opposition. Animal rights are a indeed a real concern, but need rational argument to solve, not militant flag-waving. As are many of the other issues facing society. It's just a pity that zealots get the lions share of the attention. Compromise obviously requires too much mental effort for many.
There's plenty more I could say about myself, but I'd never fit it all in without boring everyone. So you'll just have to ask.....
