So here is the deal. I had been working in a corporate job for 4 years and I came to a point where I was very unhappy and sure that this was not what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I am Jamaican and I migrated to the USA in 1994 and have always loved Reggae music.
My cousin sent me 6 brand new cds from Jamaica with the freshest and ruffest new culture and dancehall reggae coming out of Jamaica. Those 6 cds became my salvation, I listened to them on the way to work and coming home from work in my car at the highest volume possible, and as always my troubles seemed to melt away once the vibe of sweet reggae music would fill my spirit and allowed me to forget about the Babylon system!
One night shortly thereafter, I woke up at 3am and went to the kitchen. All of a sudden, ideas of starting a reggae clothing line started to come to me. I sat there and wrote 15 pages of complete inspiration, went to bed at 5 am and woke up the next day at 8am and I knew that my life had changed forever.
A few months later I formed RUF, Reggae Urban Fashion. That was a little more than 2 years ago and RUF now has distribution in the USA in Florida, Georgia, Arizona, Minnesota, Texas, California, New York,Maryland and internationally in Jamaica, Canada(Montreal) Dominica,Barabados, Anguilla, St.Martin, Trinidad, and Sweden and many more places to come in the near future! The first set of RUF designs like the Pull Up and Lion Heart and some upcoming designs like the Transdub Massiv were done by Simon Benjamin and his creativity was invaluable for the foundation of RUF. Jason Panton designed the more recent designs and we would not have gotten this far without his inspiration. His designs such as Fyah and Souljah, Empress and upcoming designs like the RUF Patch and the Rasta Cross have and continue to take to RUF to new heights.
Our Sales manager for Jamaica is Trecia Panton Thompson and she has in the short time of 1 year gotten ruf in 6 stores in Jamaica and her contacts within the music industry have been invaluable as we are signing deals with various prominent reggae artists to do their merchandising under the RUF brand. Although we are a young company, we continue to overcome the challenges that face us and see no limits to the eventual progression of RUF as a prominent brand in the future.Welcome to the RUF movement!
