Destra Garcia was born on November of 1977 in Trinidad and Tobago, she hails from a musical family.
She has been singing since she was in St. James Secondary School.
At the age of eighteen Destra hooked up with a producer at Caribbean Sound Basin and formed the four member group called PSYKE which focused mostly on singing R & B. The group only lasted for one year.
At one point, Destra decided that she must not depend on singing to earn her living. With this in mind she decided to continue with her education. She attended the School of Business and Management where she earned her diploma in Selling and Sales Managements. Destra armed with her degree would begin working in the business field. But Destra came to find out that she was not cut out for the business field and decided to return to singing.
Through it all Destra kept on singing for the love of the music. In 1999 things eventually paid off when Destra sang "Ah Have A Man Already" with Third Base. It just so happen that this was when Ms. Garica was discovered by Roy Cape. Destra went on to become the lead female singer for the Roy Cape All Stars.
She made her official debut in back in 2000 at Iwer George's "Property" party. Since then Destra has been doing what she enjoys most of all singing and performing for the people. Today, Destra is the lead female vocalist with the legendary band Atlantik.
In 2003, carnival in Trinidad and Tobago, Destra would go came in second place in Road March Competition with the major hit song "Carnival" ft. Machel Montano. Some of Destra's follow-up hit songs are "Whey you want", "Boodie", and "Choo-Choo".
In 2003 Destra released her first album Red, White, Black which included her hit duet It's Carnival with Machel Montano. The song became the virtual anthem of Trinidad and Tobago Carnival and its popularity has not fallen.Destra is famous for her style. From short shorts, to the "rockstar" look, she has captivated audiences during her soca performances. On stage, Destra is perky and girlish, a Trinidadian version of an American pop princess.Her 2006 look "soca fabulous" has been created by local designers such as Meiling and Peter Elias. From a new "glam" hairstyle, to her bold, risqué wardrobe, Destra's new look has been described as one which "is going to rock the town and will be a fashion force to reckon with."Destra won the Road March title in 2003 at the Labour Day Carnival in Brooklyn and also placed third in the Trinidad and Tobago Soca Monarch competition.She is yet to win either the Road March or Soca Monarch title in her native land. Despite this, she has become an icon in the local music industy, specializing in pop-sounding soca compositions as well as fusion music encompasing aspects of East Indian culture.Her second CD, Laventille was released in 2005.Destra is well known for hits such as "Come Beta" (featuring Shurwayne Winchester) and "Bonnie & Clyde", released for the 2004 carnival season, and 2005 megahits "Fly" and "We Say So". She also paid tribute to her home town in 2005 with a track entitled "The hammer Revisited", a duet with calypso veteran David Rudder.In 2006 Destra signed up with telecommunications giant, Digicel to become their first female spokeswoman in Trinidad and Tobago. Destra releases her fourth album Independent Lady, which features the hits 'Independent Lady', 'Aur Chale' (with Dil E Nadan), 'Colors', 'Jumpin', 'Out Ah Time', and 'Max It Up'. The Max It Up video spends several weeks in the weekly video countdown program, De Scene on Synergy TV and on MTV Tempo.
Also in 2006, Caribbean Beat magazine described Destra's music as "the kind of sound that a young person, living at the crossroads of cultures and technologies that is Trinidad and Tobago today, is likely to produce, and the breeziness of her music may well act as an antidote to the hard edge which often characterises life not only in Trinidad and Tobago, but in many other corners of the globe."
