Why are you different? Why are you that way? If you don't get in line we'll lock you away.

About Me

Hey there, my name is Paul. I'm not your typical college sophomore; I choose to spend my weekends arguing about politics, philosophy, and other stuff that people generally don't think twice about. That's right, I compete on the speech & debate team at my college. I am a political science major, currently finishing general ed at Solano Community College, planning on transferring to UC San Diego. After that, it's off to grad school and a Ph.D. After that, who knows? Despite my obvious nerdiness, I actually do know how to have a good time and I thoroughly enjoy hanging out with my friends, partying, going to movies, surfing, playing poker; you name it, I'm probably down with it!

My Interests

I love books, just about any kind suits me. I love to go to bookstores and just get lost inside. Photography is my hobby, yet more than just a hobby; it's difficult to explain. Go here to check out the photobucket & my work. No stealing! Philosophy is one of my favorite things to read and talk about; religions are another important interest of mine, especially with all the questions I have regarding my own religion. Law & politics are what I am most passionate about. Other interests of mine are sports, cars, music especially drums & percussion, and movies! And finally, I love sports, especially soccer and ice hockey.

I'd like to meet:

Anybody who shares my unique (and strange) interests. Someone who enjoys a good debate. People with strong convictions about what really matters. People with an appreciation for art, in all its various mediums. People who know how to have a good time. People that will stick with you no matter how much of a jerk you may act like at times, because they know who you really are on the inside. I guess I just want to meet the same person we all want to meet.

Music:

Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, Jethro Tull, Kansas, Transatlantic, Porcupine Tree, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Bob Dylan, Dave Matthews Band, Switchfoot, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack Johnson, Death Cab for Cutie, Bob Marley, Minus the Bear, Pepper, SUBLIME, Slightly Stoopid, 311, Long Beach Dub Allstars, Voodoo Glow Skulls, No Doubt, Deep Purple, Danzig, Cream, The Beatles, Peter Frampton, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Doors, The Clash, The Cars, Billy Idol, The Ramones, The Police, Boston, Alice Cooper, Queensryche, Dokken, Def Leppard, Guns n' Roses, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Metallica, Motley Crue, Pantera, Ratt, Slaughter, Ozzy Osbourne, Motorhead, Tesla, Whitesnake, Winger, Van Halen, The Cult, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, A.F.I., A Perfect Circle, Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed, KoRn, P.O.D., System of a Down, TOOL, NIN, Trapt, Crossfade, Chevelle, Chimaira, Killswitch Engage, In Flames, Shadows Fall, Opeth, Dream Theater,Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Opeth, Velvet Revolver, The Darkness The Black Keys, JET, The Hives, The Dead 60's, Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, The Vines, The Von Bondies, The White Stripes, The Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox 20, Barenaked Ladies, Maroon 5 Primus, Green Day, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, Rancid, Scatter the Ashes, Finch, Brand New, Matchbook Romance, Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, The Early November, Coheed and Cambria, From First to Last, Motion City Soundtrack, Yellowcard, New Found Glory, The Ataris, 1208, and Hot Water Music, Gnarls Barkley, the Beastie Boys Atmosphere, Common, and Eyedea & Ablilities, Immortal Technique, Benny Golson, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, The Dave Brubeck Quartet, James Carter, Norah Jones, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Holst and Bach. Of course, good trance or house music is good when you're in the mood for it, I like Armin van Buuren, Paul Oakenfold, Daft Punk, you get the idea.

Television:

M*A*S*H re-runs, Law & Order, ER, and cartoons! Some of my favorites are SouthPark, Family Guy, the Simpsons, American Dad. Other than that, its just the occasional documentary on Discovery or the History Channel. Television is largely a waste of time and the means by which we are turned into consumerist robots (that's enough radical ranting for this section).

Books:

Atlas Shrugged (Ayn Rand) and The Grapes of Wrath (John Steinbeck) have each profoundly changed the way I think & view the world. Then in no particular order: The Great Gatsby (F. Scott Fitzgerald), Their Eyes Were Watching God (Zora Neale Hurston), Things Fall Apart (Chinua Achebe), The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit & The Silmarillion (JRR Tolkein), Republic & Phaedo (Plato), Politics (Aristotle), Leviathan (Thomas Hobbes), The Prince (Machiavelli), The Communist Manifesto (Karl Marx), Dracula (Bram Stoker), 1984 (George Orwell), Brave New World & The Doors of Perception (Aldous Huxley), Frankenstein (Mary W. Shelley), The Odyssey (Homer), The War of the Worlds (H.G. Wells), Great Expectations (Charles Dickens), The Problem of Pain (C.S. Lewis), Hornet Flight (Ken Follett), A Christmas Carol (Charles Dickens), End of Poverty (Jeffrey D. Sachs), Farenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Ken Keasey), Catch-22 (Joseph Heller), The Six Questions of Socrates (Christopher Phillips).

Heroes:

I look up to few people, although there are certain people who deserve special mention here: my cousin Lt. Seth Palmer. Please pray for him and his men while he's stationed in Iraq. Finally, Dylan Carpowich, for hooking me up with free Chipotle, making my otherwise rotten day much better!

Go here to read a blog written by the journalist embedded with Seth's platoon.

The Death of Intelligence

First of all, please forgive the overly melodramatic title. Over breakfast today, my mom and I had a fit about the state of news today, and by extension, the state of society. She was upset ...
