Angelica Black is a phenomenal songstress who began her extraordinary musical career at the age of two when she sang her first public solo. She was born into a melodic family where her mother, father and all of her siblings sang and played musical instruments. Almost daily, her family spent hours singing and rehearsing; and these memories remain vivid and so dear to her today. As a child, she did not play with dolls and toys like most children but spent her time listening to music. In elementary school, Angelica played the violin and won a scholarship to SMU in Dallas, Texas to attend their summer music program. At the astounding age of eight years old, she played piano and was the designated church musician; and, Angelica wrote her first song at the age of ten. Since that time Angelica has played for many church congregations and ministered before thousands.
Among her peers in her freshman and sophomore years, Angelica was known as a dancer and most people didn’t know she was a gifted and talented musician and singer. In her junior year, Angelica used her talents and inspirations bring into being the Riley High School Gospel Choir (Victory in Praise Choir) which became the very first gospel choir in the South Bend Community School Corporation to be recognized as an official extra curricular school activity. This choir grew from four to 80 members as all five local high schools participated.
Angelica’s life was influenced by a number of talented people beginning with her mother and moving on to Willie Ayres, Aretha Franklin, the Williams Brothers, and the Hawkins Singers. As she grew, other “musical heroes†began to influence Angelica and among these were Stevie Wonder, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Brian Adams, Queen, Bon Jovi, Sting and Prince.
As her musical career progressed, Angelical performed in concerts with world renowned artists such as Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Stevie Wonder, Kirk Franklin and others. She appeared as the opening artists in concerts featuring Vicki Winans, Nikki Ross, Kurt Carr, Twinkie Clark, Dorenda Clark, The Williams Brothers, The Jackson Southernaires, Deitrick Haddon and many others. One of Angelica’s most memorable career highlights was singing with Stevie Wonder and then recording half of her first CD in Stevie Wonder’s personal home studio. Angelical has released two albums: “Jellie’s First Jam†which was published by T. Ricks Publishing through BMI and her most recent CD “Caught Between Heaven and Earth.â€
Angelica’s music has progressed as her walk with God has expanded. Music has shaped and impacted Angelica’s life in a profound way and at one point it was actually her whole life’s identity. But as she continued to live and grow in Christ, Angelica realized that music was not “who†she was but that it was a gift to be offered. She notes how her music was once “soulish†and dealt with how she was feeling at the time but then the center of her music began to evolve around God and Who He is. In her early years and because it was so second nature to her, Angelica did not consider her music as a tool that ministers to others; but now she understands the role in worship and healing that her gospel music brings.
In addition to loving gospel music, Angelica, “Jellie†as she’s known to family and close friends, enjoys singing and playing various genre of music including Pop and Rhythm and Blues.
