The coming of urban culture led by an artist who was born to do it. A messiah, of some sort, destined to recharge and accelerate the pulse of rap music. Inspired by the essence of the craft, Napoleon Suarez is that artist. Although, admittedly immature and infatuated with material things, Napoleon is not the typical rappers tale. In 2000, he graduated from High School where he became a star athlete, and received an athletic scholarship to the prestigious University of Notre Dame. While music pumped through his veins, schoolwork was his main priority. “It wasn’t until my senior year that I really started taking my music seriouslyâ€, says Napoleon from his desk which stays cluttered with records and miscellaneous production hardware.Napoleon uses the landscape of his childhood as inspiration for his music and motivation for his career. The son of two military parents who were down with the culture from its onset, Napoleon grew up in a home where Soul music was the ideology of choice. “My father was a huge music fan. I would come home from practice some days and here him playing records and singing off key for hours on end. Everything from Supertramp to Santana to The Delfonics. My mother was from DC and I still pick her brain to this day about songs that she used to listen to. In my house, that’s what we grew up to. To this day, I still bug my family members for records to sample†The result was a 10-year-old whose heart pumped soul music. It was only a matter of time before Napoleon started coming up with his own rhymes. A while later, Napoleon and a good friend of his started there own rap label called Poetic Productions. “My boy got this production program for the computer and he made the beats while I flowed on top of them.†This happened during the early 1990s, to which he refers to as the Golden Age of rap music. After a few years of polishing his skills, Napoleon decided to try his hand at the production side of the game. “I used to like to rhyme over certain types of beats and the only way I could do that was to make them myselfâ€. It wasn’t long before Napoleon had given up rhyming altogether to concentrate exclusively on the production side. Although he jokingly admits that his very first beats were “wackâ€, he says he has come a long way to where he gets dozens of phone calls a week from potential clients. With influences such as Pete Rock, Alchemist, and DJ Premiere, Napoleon is a true producer. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame with a Sociology Degree, Napoleon decided that maybe he would try his hand at corporate America. “I was at my job everyday thinking it could get no better than this. I had money for the very first time and I was actually doing something with my lifeâ€, says Napoleon. But that itch he had for music never seemed to disappear. On his lunch break he would sneak to his car instead of going to eat and look for new records to sample or write a few bars that had popped into his mind. A few days later he quit that same job and decided to concentrate exclusively on his music career. “I just had so many ideas that I couldn’t concentrate equally on my 9 to 5 and my music. I wanted the two to be the same thingâ€.With the support of his family and his manager/best friend B Hall, Napoleon continues to bypass the norm as he releases his music independently and builds his very own brand--something which he has done since moving to Philadelphia and linking with numerous heavy hitters in the game. You can catch the young visionary on his very own mix-tape release from his own “Best Out†label which is creatively entitled “Napoleon Dynamiteâ€. Napoleon is seeking to change the way the industry looks at the rapper/emcee. “I want it to be cool for kids to want to go to college and be what they want to be. If it’s a rapper than it’s a rapper. If it’s a accountant than it is an accountant. My goal is to be the voice of the young professionals.†With his talent for writing and producing, there is very little doubt in my mind that Napoleon won’t do just that.
