Pistol Chunky is a one man guy, a one piece band, a singer/songwriter with a do-or-die attitude. Before becoming Pistol Chunky he used to play drums for Panda (mexican band), cut a demo and played quite a few live gigs with them, but later realized he wanted to move on and create his own music.Time passed by and he kept at it - self-teaching himself to play the piano (a white upright Yamaha his sister used to play), the guitar (usually borrowing his brother's or a friend's guitar) and kept playing the drums (owned like 5 different sets). His songwriting skills evolved and he started playing as Pistol Chunky in small bars and parties that Happy Fi Recs organized. He made a lot of friends in the music scene in Monterrey, Mexico. He's played in the underground scene in his hometown Monterrey, Mexico with friends from Happy Fi Recs since 1997 ish, alternating rehearsings, recordings, live acts and other encounters with such names as Chajoe (Nina), Goma (Goma), Mario (Mario), Adrian (Nina), Catsup (Black Forest, Quiero Club), Bitle (Quiero Club), Aldo (Sport), Dj Papa (Turista) from the Happy Fi old-school crew.Then came THE CHUNKETTES!!! Explosive blues, mellow britpop/classic rock/folk type of song-oriented stuff, upbeat plain and vibrant rock and roll ... something along those lines. This band is Jorge Gonzales aka Porno (guitar, bass, vocals), Juan Reyes aka Magic Bishop Don Juan (drums) and Pistol Chunky (guitar, keys, vocals). They recorded "The Summer of Love" sessions in the early 2000's, recorded "Oh Sand Wolf" in the summer of 2005 in Studio Center in Miami, and are looking forward to collaborating again in a near future.Then came the Happy Fi compilations. A deal was signed with EMI Mexico to release a boxed set of 3 compilations including several Pistol Chunky songs and showcasing eclectic and promising unsigned acts from the underground scene in Monterrey. The compilation was released in Mexico in December 2005 under the label Happy Fi Recs and EMI Mexico named Shock a Bra Pull a Cali. Pistol Chunky had 5 songs in that compilation.So now we've come full circle. Pistol takes the mic:Hi friends!
Songwriting, Drumming, Piano, Guitar, Singing, Recording, Mixing, Breathing and Living music - I love it all. As of now, I work at a recording studio in NY city. The passion I have for making music, the recording process and the outcomes of it all still makes my heart move a great deal. Thanks for listening, thanks for stopping by.
