Rational Animal works to improve the lives of New York City's homeless animals, working animals and wildlife by using media to communicate to the public the actions they can take to help animals in their communities. For more information, visit our website at http://www.rational-animal.org...
Rational Animal's mission is to increase awareness about at-risk animals in New York City. At-risk animals are those whose lives and well-being are in jeopardy. We create media campaigns and special events to advocate primarily for homeless companion animals. As we are able, we also participate in campaigns for performing animals, working animals and wildlife in NYC. Our volunteer organization is driven by our core of artists, writers and designers, filmmakers, editors, event planners, researchers and ethologists - all animal lovers who use their talents to creatively produce media to increase public awareness for the animals that need our help.
Rational Animal Rocks! Music legends the Beastie Boys, the Buzzcocks, and Pearl Jam were early adopters of Rational Animal and invited us to distribute our animal advocacy materials and fundraise at their concerts. With such rockin' support and the need to get more people involved in helping NYC's homeless animals, we created our annual concert GIMME SHELTER: Rock & Rescue NYC. (ART: Pearl Jam & Buzzcocks).
GIMME SHELTER: Rock & Rescue NYC celebrates the efforts of New Yorkers who help the thousands of wonderful animals who are abandoned at city shelters and face euthanasia due to lack of space and too many litters. This benefit concert raises awareness and reminds people of the goal proclaimed by Mayor Bloomberg to work towards the end of euthanasia of healthy and treatable in city shelters by 2015..
Gimme Shelter concert performers have included rock legends the Beastie Boys, Debbie Harry, Marshall Crenshaw, Nellie McKay, members of Blue Oyster Cult, the Buzzcocks and the Dictators..
Trails to Tails Map The Trails to Tails Map Series plots the locations of adoption centers, dog runs, and animal-friendly businesses in all five boroughs. It also includes emergency numbers, low cost spay/neuter services, breed rescues and feral cat information. Now in it's fourth edition, Trails to Tails are made available through all New York Public Library and YMCA branches and at animal supply stores throughout the city. www.trailstotails.com.
Video Production Rational Animal produces high-quality TV spots advocating adoption and spay/neuter. Using humor and rescued animals, these spots point viewers to the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals and run on NY1, WABC, NYC-TV.These spots can also be customized for use by any community across the country. Orange Ribbons for At-Risk Animals Did you know that animals have their own advocacy ribbon? It's official, and it's orange! In 2004 Rational Animal developed an orange ribbon campaign to match the Mayor's Alliance orange "Adopt Me" vest worn by dogs in need of adoption. We handed out thousands of orange ribbons attached to bookmarks describing good animal guardianship and claimed the orange ribbon for animals by officially registering it with the US Patent and Trademark Office. We provide ribbons in quantity to animal advocacy organizations to help them reward outstanding animal rescue, to use as a conversation starter about animals and to help with fundraising. www.orangeribbonforanimals.org.
Gingerbread Homes for Animals An annual winter season event is as delectable as it is fun and educational. Animal-inspired gingerbread houses made by NYC’s best pastry chefs are exhibited along with humane messages about animal and activities for all ages. Every year, a portion of funds raised go to the Picasso Veterinary Fund to help NYC homeless animals with medical emergencies. Rational Animal joins with PastryScoop.com and The French Culinary Institute to bring this festive event to the public. In Winter 2007 the fifth annual event year unveiled a special edition of Gingerbread Homes for Animals holiday cards. www.gingerbreadhomesforanimals.org.
Rational Animal is a 501c3 charity, EIN 11-3696257 Rational Animal was founded in New York City in 2002 by Susan Brandt, a media professional with a passion for animals. She believed that with so many animals lives at risk due to the actions of humans (often committed unknowingly) more information about positive actions people can take to benefit animals can only help. Susan is inspired by her family, all of whom love animals and make helping animals a part of their lives, and the amazing rescued animals who have shared their lives with her, including Jackie and Bucky pictured here..
