With Hip Hop becoming so saturated, it really takes something unique for the industry to take hold of a new artist. Then it takes substance for the artist not to become an infamous one-hit-wonder. From having to fight the color barrier in hip-hop, to having to fight for his freedom in the courtroom, Young Chris, certainly has what it takes to become the industry's next headliner.
Born in Torrance, California July 12, 1984, Chris Mullins a.k.a. Young Chris, moved to Oklahoma with his mother when he was 7. He began rapping at age 17 with some friends just to pass the time away. It wasn't until after high school that Chris became serious about his music. He and two friends formed a group and began recording songs. While attending college he recorded and released two albums with the group and gained some exposure in a small area in Southern Oklahoma and North Texas.
After the groups second album, Chris decided he wanted to take a shot at doing a solo project. He dropped out of college and approached long time friend, Chris Brown a.k.a. Hopp, about starting a record label. Hopp liked the idea and from there the two formed Grind Time Entertainment. However, Chris's solo project was abruptly put on hold when he was arrested on drug charges in May of 2006. After a long court battle that landed him a lengthy probation sentence, Chris was back in the booth. He has since released four mixtapes, "The Great White Hype", "Ambitions Of A Hustler", "Okie Made", "Patiently Waiting Vol.1" and is getting recognition all over the Sooner State. He's opened shows for many major artists including: Plies, Lil Scrappy, Tum-Tum, Paul Wall, DJ UNK, Fabolous, Lil Keke, Lil Boosie, Webbie, and many more.
With the recent incarceration of Grind Time Ent. co-CEO, Hopp, Young Chris is extremely focused. "I got the streets on my back and I wanna make sure my homeboy got somethin' better to come home to," says Chris about his friend and partner's shortcoming with the law. With his fourth mixtape currently out and an album scheduled for release in 2010, Young Chris is guaranteed to make an impact in the world of hip hop. "The streets love me cuz I'm the truth and thats what I bring to the booth. Free Hopp!! Its Grind Time!!"
