Angus is one of the hardest-working, most active players in the Canadian and International Breaks scene. His successful record label (Money Shot Recordings), his position at the world-renowned Release Records, as well as his long-standing radio show (Money Shot Radio… formerly called Futurized Radio) has garnered him quite an international following, so much so that he was recently voted 38th Best Breaks DJ at the 2004/2005 International Breakbeat Awards (Breakspoll.com).
Angus’ love for making music began at an early age with piano and later on with guitar. As a teenager, he got into electronic music however it wasn’t until 1998 that he put his first needle to record in front of a live crowd while a student at University of Western Ontario, in London, Canada. Since then, it’s taken Angus Robinson a very short time indeed to climb the breakbeat ranks of his hometown of Toronto and, for that matter, all of Canada.
After moving back to Toronto, Angus took a full time position with one of the world’s top record stores, Release Records ( www.releaserecords.com ), to head up their online ordering platform and assemble their Breaks department. Not to be left behind by the changing technology, Angus recently helped set up the digital downloads section which has been a big hit with both DJs and the non-12”-buying public worldwide. In 2006, Release Records closed its vinyl shop, but the download shop, and new digital promo pool ( www.releasepromo.com ) continue to thrive.
His position at Release Records, radio show, and record label ensures that Angus is always armed to the teeth with the freshest selection of new tunes, Money Shot testers, promos, and CDRs, the likes of which are in very high demand among fellow DJs. His style is hard to pin down, but an underlying element of funk is present in everything he plays.
In his DJing career, Angus has held residencies at The Guvernment, Boa, Turbo, System Soundbar, Limelight, Fever (in Hamilton), Milano's, Lush (in London), Tonic, The Blue Room (in London), Bauhaus and more. He has had the pleasure of playing alongside Meat Katie, Koma & Bones, Krafty Kuts, Jody of Way out West, DJ Hyper, General Midi, Atomic Hooligan, Skool of Thought, Adam Freeland, Rennie Pilgrem, Evil Nine, Ali B, Simply Jeff, and many more. His talents have earned him gigs all over Canada as well as the USA, Taiwan, and China.
In October 2002, Angus launched Futurized Radio (now called Money Shot Radio - www.moneyshotradio.com ) on New York's protonradio.com, and it instantly became a hit amongst Proton's listener base, as well as breakbeat enthusiasts from all over the world. Futurized serves a listener base of over 2000 listeners per week, and has hosted mixes from the world's most groundbreaking DJs, such as Soul of Man, Atomic Hooligan, Fort Knox Five, Future Funk Squad, Freddy Fresh, Elite Force, Dark Globe, Lee Coombs, Plump DJs, and more. Since its inception, Money Shot Radio has been nominated twice for Best Breaks Radio Show at the International Breakbeat Awards (Breakspoll)… however BreaksFM always wins… Bastards!!
In early 2004, Angus set up Money Shot Recordings, an outlet for the funkiest breaks in the business. The label looks set to make a big stir on the international breaks scene, with the imprint’s current output being supported by the likes of Plump DJs, Donald Glaude, Stanton Warriors, Soul of Man, Meat Katie, Dylan Rhymes, Crystal Method, Drumattic Twins, and many more. The current Money Shot artist roster consists of Circuit Breaker, Myagi, Steelzawheelz, Drumattic Twins, Atomic Hooligan, Infekto, Boogie Army, and there’s loads more in the works. Angus recently outfitted his apartment with a brand new recording studio to put his knowledge of piano and guitar to use. Expect to see some funky-fresh Angus Robinson tunes forthcoming on Money Shot in the not-so-distant future.
