If you have suggestions for this page let me know!)I was born in Wadowice, Poland; given the name Karol Jozef Wojtya. My mother passed when I was 6 years old, and so I was raised by my father. Who was a very kind and holy man. I studied at the Jangiellonian University in Poland, in secret as the Nazis had invaded Poland, and closed the schools. I was forced to worked in a stone quarry and a chemical plant. In the Fall of 1942, I was accepted by the Archdiocese of Kracow as a clandestine Seminarian, and began underground studies in Philosophy. This was done in secret as the Nazis, were jailing Priests and Intellectuals. On November 1, 1946, I was ordained a priest by Cardinal Sapieha. On November 15, 1946 I went to Rome, to complete my graduate Theological studies. Completed my first doctorate in June 1948.
On July 4, 1958 I was named Auxiliary Bishop of Krakow, by Pope Pius XII. Named Archbishop of Krakow, on December 30, 1963; by Pope Paul VI. I participated during the Second Vatican Council, impressing many with intellegence. Created a Cardinal on June 28, 1967; by Pope Paul VI.
On October 16, 1978, I was elected as Bishop of Rome, and took the name John Paul II; and broke precedent by addressing the crowd in Saint Peter's Square, in "our Italian language". I was the first non-Italian Pope in 450 years.I was the first Pope to ever visit a Jewish Temple, I worked to improve relations between the Jewish people and the Church. I did more than any other Pope in history to try and improve relations between the Western and Eastern Churches.
