I'm outside playing...

About Me

I'm a ramblin' man. Not like in the Allman Brothers song but in the don't-know-when-to-shut-the-f-up sense of the word. Point being that once I get started, if someone is still listening (or at least appears to be listening) then I will invariably meander from one subject to the next. So before I get too far off topic here, I'll get on to talking about myself which is what I suppose I'm meant to do in this space. I moved my old bio to a blog which you are welcome to read if you like. I decided it was a little lame and nearly out-of-date (as I am turning 29 this month).
I work too much which sucks since I'm not crazy about either of my jobs (global sourcing coordinator at Pfaltzgraff by day, server at The Left Bank by the occassional night). I'm in a band called The Glorious Filaments (see link below). I speak Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. I've never been married (though I've felt like I was a time or 2). I am currently unattached. I once thought my heart was broke cuz it stopped working for awhile. I think it is back now.
I love music and film. I love random acts of kindness. I love smiles from strangers. I love learning new things (especially new words). I love to read. I love my mom because she has the biggest heart I've ever known. I love a sappy love song if it's sincere and can make you cry. I love a kick ass song if it makes you tear your living room apart with air guitar acrobatics. I love Sunday mornings. I love biking the rail trails. I love traveling (doing pretty well at about 12 countries plus Hong Kong). I love NPR on long drives and sunny days. Love the smell of suntan lotion at the beach. Love calls from old friends. That time of day when the sun is about to set and everything in the east is blazing and glowing against the contrast of the looming night sky. Sincerity. Tact. A sense of diplomacy. The smell of coffee in the morning. Good food. Good company. Good conversation. A good laugh.
What do I hate? That's a strong word. Perhaps we should say "don't understand." Well, plenty. Ignorance. Intolerance. Guys obsessed with sports or cars and girls obsessed with shopping and reality TV. Life is your own journey, don't let corporate America be the captain. Gambling/card games. Wal-Mart. Traffic jams. McMansions/Starter Castles (my bro builds the fucking things!). Stereotypes. Presumptiousness. People who won't watch a foreign film just because they can't be bothered with subtitles. Short attention spans. Stubborn people. Alarm clocks. People that vacation in the same place every year. Cheating (in love or on a test etc)--just a real lack of character if you ask me. "Because-I-say-so" parents. Make up. Masks. Hangovers. Mullets. Zubaz pants. Lower back tatoos. Girls that squeeze into tight jeans and belly shirts that squeeze their back fat into a cornice of suspended blubber. If you can't dress yo'self then maybe you should call your mom! Okay, I'm done...

My Interests

Music. This is pretty much my life. I love listening to music whether it's my CDs, Sirius, or live in da club. I also write songs and play in a band. You can check out our www.myspace.com/thegloriousfilaments. I love movies too. Bit of a snob about it actually. I'm not big on most hollywood crap (there are many exceptions though). My Netflix account keeps me pretty busy with the films that often don't find their way into our local theaters and video store though.I also love traveling. I've visited over a dozen different countries and I lived in China for 2 years as an English teacher. Needless to say that experience has had a big influence on the person I am today. Get out and see the world baby. Life is short!

I'd like to meet:

Noam Chomsky, Thom Yorke, Howard Zinn, Ed Norton, Jack Black, Scarlett Johansen, interesting people at bars with more to talk about than drinking

Music:

Zeppelin, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Cure, Depeche Mode, George Michael, Faith No More, Dinosaur Jr., Nirvana, Green Day, Blind Melon, Red Hot Chili Peppers, New Order (the 80's in general), Crowded House, The Mars Volta, At the Drive In, Alien Ant Farm, Super Furry Animals, Flaming Lips, Ben Harper, Sublime, Jane's Addiction, Frank Zappa, Blur, Fugazi, Phoenix, Keane, Kings of Convenience, Beck, Beastie Boys, Radiohead, Muse, Gang of Four, Bloc Party, Neil Young, John Mayer, Metallica, G n F n R, Bob Marley & The Wailers, The Police, Bright Eyes, The Faint, DJ Shadow, Ryan Adams, Pete Yorn, Tenacious D, Wicked Scepter, Wyld Stallyns, Blur, Kheris, Fear & Invention, The Underwater, Air

Movies:

Fight Club, Goodfellas, Wedding Crashers, Sideways, Run Lola Run, Motorcycle Diaries, The Sea Inside, Donnie Darko, Big Fish, Back to the Future Trilogy, King Kong (Jackson's), Forrest Gump, The Big Lebowski, Rushmore, The Life Aquatic, The Departed, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Wonderboys, Pleasantville, Lost in Translation, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, ... .. width="425" height="350" ..

Television:

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Conan Obrien, South Park, The History Channel, Discovery Channel, Free Speech TV, VH1 in the morning when they actually play music. Everything else is pretty much crap in my opinion. I also occasionally will get sucked into a late night Esteban guitar infomercial. This is the lowest rung of pathetic though. I refuse to "involve" myself with any television show that prohibits missing any consecutive episode to the pain of losing the plot. Order my schedule around a TV show? No thanks!

Books:

Mostly non-fiction, anything PJ O'Rourke, No Logo--Naomi Kline; Culture Jam--Kalle Lasn; Fast Food Nation--Eric Schlosser; Travels with Charlie--John Steinbeck, Mother Tongue--Bill Bryson; Catcher in the Rye--JD Salinger to name but a few

Heroes:

Lenny Bruce, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Superman, Spiderman, Batman, oh wait, those are SUPER Heroes.
