About Me

Made with the MyTheme myspace editor
Date 17.3 03Title of piece: DESENSITISATIONThe project was site-specific in that it uses the connotations of the venue i.e.: a commercial setting, to comment on the commodification of art, the consumerist society and the desensitization of the public through media saturation. The artist is presented as the product and the painting that was produced during the ‘happening’ became the stage in which the installation is played out and destroyed thus immortalizing it in myth and protecting it from commercialisation.

Christchurch road, Boscombe Boumemouth Dusk till Midnight 27th May 2003The evening began when all the equipment and players were in place. The event was to be spontaneous to a degree. None of the musicians had played together before and no one knew what exactly was going to happen, even Grey Paul the lynchpin of our band of degenerates had only a vague game plan. As the music Started, Paul began to paint. Under the glare of the UV lights fluorescent marks appeared on a blank white canvas mounted on the right-hand side of the stage. A strobe light flashed while simultaneously a data projector fired the recorded events onto the stage as they unfolded. Bored with painting from his Own twisted mind Grey Paul invaded the audience armed with a blackboard and chalk. Viewers were encouraged to draw whatever they liked on the board, these images were then re-interpreted and transformed from chalk to paint onto the canvas and erased from the board. Each of us wore boiler suits and latex masks molded from Paul’s head, hiding our identities and leaving us to cause mayhem without the risk of reprisals The music built up in conjunction with the painting and became more complex as the musicians reacted to the audience and the painter’s interpretation of their drawings. We were so hot we decided to have a beer break. During the first half of the performance the audience was cut off from the stage by the dimensions of the venue. With some moving of furniture we managed to open up more space so that the grisly finale of the evening could be witness more fully. After a short break the drums began to thump, signaling our call to arms. We donned our masks and steeled ourselves for more chaos. The music in the second half of the performance was impressive drawing on their varied musical influences the newly formed trio played an eclectic set ranging from speed metal to raw funk. As the band played on the blackboard was sent out to gather material for the painting, which was now becoming busy with overlapping brush strokes. At around lO.5Opm Grey Paul was conspicuous by his absence. The music was building up to a crescendo when the canvas began to twitch. A knife blade pierced its center, spilling out white light from the 2K floodlight directed at the audience from behind the stage. The length of the canvas was slashed again and again; each cut releasing more light onto the crowd. Finally, as if being born from the womb of his own creation Grey Paul emerged victorious to taunt the now numbed public. At workThe rat trike
