"Transcending thoughts"
Random Paraphrase written by Brendan J from Plato’s Symposium.
Plato articulated a very interesting theory of how love is related to beauty and procreation, and the various stages it goes through in human life to meet the final goal at the end. This is a potential which is not often thoroughly achieved, but nevertheless it is a state of consciousness which is indeed possible. For example a young man entering maturity will turn to beautiful human bodies, lovers, and if one of those bodies leads him correctly, he will procreate beautiful words, dialogue between them lovers. From this he will realise that there is beauty in anybody, it’s quite mad not to regard the beauty in all bodies as one and the same. Having realised that, he must become a lover of all beautiful bodies, and relax this passionate love for one body, despising it and considering it a slight thing.
The next stage is that he must consider beauty in souls more valuable than beauty in the body, so that if someone who is decent in his soul has even a slight physical bloom, even then it’s enough for him, and he loves and cares for the other person, and gives birth to the sorts of words, and seeks beauty that makes “men into better men” such as that he may next observe the beauty that exists in kinds of activity, in laws, politics, etc and observes that this is all “mutually related”.
From here he will leave behind society. After activities, he must lead him to the different kinds of knowledge, in order that he may next observe that beauty which is vast, and no longer slavishly attached to the beauty belonging to a single thing – a young boy, some individual human being, or one kind of activity – may cease to be worthless and petty, but instead turned towards a great sea of beauty and contemplating that, may bring to birth many beautiful, even magnificent, words and thoughts in a love of wisdom that grudges nothing, grudges against no one, until there, with his strength and stature increased, he may catch sight of a single kind of knowledge.
Occuring during the later stages of his lifetime, moving upwards for the sake of beauty, finally from the sciences of beauty and order, to THAT single science, which is the single science of nothing other than beauty itself. He will realise that beauty which does not perish in time, the beauty which breaks the bounds of time.
