About Me
The Revolutionary Kind are a rock band from Sydney, Australia. They don’t play as often as they should, and they don’t rehearse nearly as often as they should. When they do play, their mixture of songs, ranging from pop to rock to country to nu-metal (OK, not nu-metal, that’s a lie), are delivered with such gusto and faux-bravado to inspire even the most apathetic listener.
Fronted by the exceptionally named lyrical craftsman Johnny Vance, a distinguished solo performer in his own right, the band have an ear for quirky melodies and catchy chorus’, all kept in time by powerhouse drummer Clinton O’Hanlon. The band have played such venues as The Gaelic Club and the Annandale Hotel, and have, in one formation or another, supported the likes of international tourists Band of Horses and Jon Auer (of Posies/Big Star fame), as well as a myriad of Australian artists such as 78 Saab, Peabody, Whiskey Go Go's and iOTA.
The Revolutionary Kind (at least an early incarnation of such) also feature in Glocal, a soon-to-be-released documentary by UK based Chestnut Productions, showcasing an array of local music scenes from around the globe. The Revolutionary Kind are one of three feature artists from Australia, the others being Dappled Cities Fly and The Maladies. A live to air performance of Summer Dresses in the FBi Radio Studios is also likely to feature in the documentary, an admirable effort in itself, given that up until that point, Johnny had only played one gig, a ramshackle affair built around the idea that he had 45 minutes worth of material with which he could impress his friends.
After a lineup expansion and change, the band continue to surge forward with gigs attracting positive feedback and a growing fanbase. Be sure to catch this band live whilst they continue to burn brightly.
“[The Revolutionary Kind’s] distinctively crafted songs can work in a number of formats and volumes, but the quality and quirk in them remains. It’s a voice that can be wistful and hopeful, and never anything but honest.†– Ross Clelland, Drum Media
"His lyrics have a story telling that encapsulate the music written with it, taking you on a 'revolutionary kind' of journey. Not having seen these guys play live I can only guess it gets better... In all this is great head bopping foot tapping music, from the opening track Pop Life, to the closing track Escapades, you start grooving more and more." - The Sandwich Club (http://www.sandwichclub.fm)
"The only regret of the Strongbow fuelled week we spent with the charismatic Vance was that we met him at the start of his career. The exciting prospect of Johnny is what he will be writing about and playing this year." - Phil Heron, Chestnut Productions (UK)
"Johnny Vance is a man of musical and literary allusions, poetic vignettes and beautiful honesty. See him before everyone else does." - AH Cayley, Mess + Noise Magazine
"I wish I was Johnny Vance, he's my new hero" - Conan O'Brien, Late Night With Conan O'Brien
