Here is the sound behind UK gospel garage group Livin' Proof (The Choice [The Way] and Givin' You All the Praise featured on Phat & Heavy Vol 1, and more recently on DJ Yemi's Urban UK Gospel Mix Vol 1) , Niki Carless Love is the Greatest and other tracks from her album 'Words of Life', and a major contributor to the compilation, Beats for Da Streets Volume 1. He also brought us the UK Soulful House hit, Not Only Human, which features his wife, Lisa Mayers . In the pipeline are several more up and coming UK gospel artists who are hoping Phil can add that unique anointing to their songs. And to think it all started with a twin cassette deck and cheap sampling keyboard in the bedroom of his parents home in respectable commuter-belt Hertfordshire.
So who is Phil Mayers? Just like Clark Kent has a secret life, behind his glasses, single breasted suit and quiet unassuming humility, here is a mad producer and arranger, (also known as Da Brain) music director, worship leader, church deacon, husband and father of four. Phil's not averse to a spot of singing either. You may have noticed him on Niki's recordings, but you'll certainly notice him on Lisa Mayers upcoming album release, Fix Your Mind. He is passionate about God and music and he wont hesitate to worship Him on one of the several instruments he plays. Now let's join Phil in at his home in leafy North West London. Its a mild Saturday afternoon, and strains of a kick drum can be heard through an open window. He's feelin it! You can tell when somethings sounding good because his head starts bobbing back and forth to the beat almost involuntarily. An enigmatic smile appears on his lips. Another hot beat is being cooked up in the vaults of the Secret Place Studios. His sons and daughter are in the hallway playing, but they have to be quiet as Daddy's mixing a track.
