About Me

I like knowing to know random historical facts that i can use to impress people. I am especially interested in the origin of street names. Perhaps because I want to have a street named after me.

Pico Blvd was named after Pio de Jesus Pico IV, the last Mexican governor of California. He introduced the idea of serving drinks in ox-horns, which had a false wooden bottom to reduce the liquor sold. (BOO!!!) In 1845, Pico made Los Angeles the state capital. (YAY!!!) The Pio Pico name is carried on by his great grandsons Johnny Pio Pico Jr. and Joel Luis Pio Pico.

Did you know Olympic Blvd was named so during LA's failed bid at the 1928 Olympics? Thanks Stacy!!

Did you know La Brea is Spanish for "the tar" and so La Brea street is named so because it runs near the tar pits? Home | Browse | Search | Invite | Film | Mail | Blog | Favorites | Forum | Groups | Events | Videos | Music | Comedy | Classifieds
