Read the old bio from 2004:
"We are the undisputed King Of Bands.....How's that hit ya?"
Spend a few moments with the members of Evansville, Indiana's own
London Calling and you will hear an abundance of over the top and
ridiculous statements such as the one above. The fact is, that in a
day and age where everyone seems to take themselves way too serious,
London Calling just wants to have fun! Or as they put it.... they just
want to "RAWK!"
Formed in December of 2002, London Calling (or "L/C" as they say)
members Jamie Rowe, Jon Gilbert, Matthew Martin, and Derek D. Sorrells
set their sights on playing music that they loved. The result was a
sound that is best desribed as Hard Pop. Hook laden, sing-along
choruses delivered with the perfect amount of rock and roll
abandon...almost like 70's era Cheap Trick..but with their feet firmly
planted in the here and now!
"When we first got together, we had an instant chemistry" says Derek.
"The songs would just magically come alive and it wasn't very long
until we found "our sound". It's what makes us L/C, that sound is the
4 of us. Add or take away from that..and it's going to change" It
wasn't long after that first meeting that the band felt the need to
get their new sound committed to tape. The band entered the studio
with friend and engineer Tim Bushong to record the first round of
songs. Recorded in 2 days, those first recordings spawned the song
Supernatural Girl which quickly became a pivitol song for the band.
Within a month of recording and sending it out to a few select people
in the industry, London Calling were getting attention from labels
both large and small. It was an exciting time for the band. Just ask
Jamie: "We live in the middle of what some call "fly over territory",
the fact that we were getting people in Los Angeles and New York to
jump on what we were doing was a validating feeling. And certainly a
sign that we were moving fast forward! It just made us hungrier to
take LC over the top!"
The band returned to the studio in April to record a few more new
songs. This session, combined with the original 6 songs, turned into
what became the bands debut Independent release "The New Sensation".
Released in June, the band started buliding the buzz worldwide.
"People started downloading our music", says Jon. "Word got around
fast". "We printed up 1,200 copies of the CD not knowing who they were
for" Matthew chimes in, "And within 9 months every single one of those
discs had found a home!"
The buzz brought them to the attention of Swedish Independent label
Atenzia Records. In October of 2003, The band inked a deal that would
license their music for release in Europe and Japan. The band went
into the studio once again with friend Tim Bushong to record 6 new
tracks to tighten up the existing album. The result is London
Calling's debut international release "You're So Lucky" which is to be
released in June of 2004.
In the midst of all this, London Calling wasn't sitting at home wasting time. In contrast, the band made time to play
all over the United States! They have shared the stage with a diverse
list of bands (Days Of The New, Local H, Gigalo Aunts, Sponge, Enuff
Z' Nuff, Third Day, The 88, and Faster Pussycat to name a few). Venues
have included diverse joints like the ultra-trendy Los Angeles clubs
The Knitting Factory and Spaceland, New York City's mega cool Tribeca
Rock Club, Big Daddy's in Tallahasee, RCKTWN in Nashville, The Lava
Room in Baltimore, Cleveland's Hi-Fi Club, and even Paramount's King's Island Amusement Park
in Ohio!
What will the future hold for London Calling?
If the past is any indication, The hard working and driven band known
as London Calling will be on the fast track to becoming the bonafide
"King Of Bands" they joke about.
