Myspace LayoutsLeo Gutierrez (Solo DJ) grew up in Southern California, a place where sounds and music influenced everything. You’ve got neighborhood kids singing, people cruising down the street pumping their earth shattering bass, speakers pounding at backyard boogie style house parties, the sounds of music we always prevalent. It never mattered what type of music was being played, it was the beats, the treble, and the bass that got Leo’s attention. As a youngster Leo always dreamed of being a part of that scene, the trick was to find out what his musical niche was to be. He dabbled in capturing sound and cultivating it into music by recording different things around him. Then he began to realize his dream was becoming a reality and the music itself was taking over, all he had to do was harness it.
He was saving money to pay off a credit card and pulled it out to count exactly how much was saved, it was like $600. Leo got off work and headed to the bank to make that deposit. In line, looking at the cash he started thinking, what if I didn’t have this payment? What would I have spent this money on? The answers all hit him at once, buy some DJ equipment and start spinning music. He jumped out of line, got back in his car and went straight to Guitar Center to check the possibility. He figured he would buy this now and enjoy it, and then pay the card off later. At least he thought it would be that easy. He not only used his savings to buy equipment but pulled out his other cards and then maxed them out too. He figured the cost was worth it.He started spinning his records over and over at the local juice bar where he worked and his friends kicked it. They would tell him, his style was awesome and he should spin at parties. He began to DJ events for the love of the music and the reminiscent feeling the music gave to people. Memories of his early years flooded back to him and he realized he found his niche. He was 18 years old and realized his simple hobby was evolving and he was living his dream. He soon found out being a DJ was a great way to provide for himself, promote good music, make people dance and be a part of his community. This was his calling and nothing could stop him from living the dream. With the money he made at house parties he began to divulge his music collection and expand his style to all types of music. His style was exploding and he had nowhere to go but up.In 2001 just one year after realizing his passion he began to DJ at a local fitness club for it guests. There he was recognized by another DJ who had too many events to handle and offered Solo DJ a shot to expand his horizons into the mainstream DJ movement. Solo DJ’s range of events went from house parties for friends to weddings and corporate events. House parties were easy in retrospect, weddings became a challenge. He had always played music to pump the crown or get people moving, but weddings had a twist. What songs do you play to get grandpa moving with a young granddaughter and have both of them moving with the music? All at the same time as keeping the rest of the crowd entertained. This was his next task to overcome as a DJ. He learned that no matter how complex the crowds taste, it was up to him to make the experience memorable. That is what being a DJ is all about.
