It all began on a Monday morning in Detroit, Michigan.“She so beautiful!†proclaimed a woman passing by the maternity ward. “She is what a real baby is supposed to look like!â€â€œWhat will you name her?†the doctor asked. “I don’t know,†was my reply. “I want her name to be special, nothing common.Hence “La Sonya†was born.La Sonya Gunter has had a love and passion for singing since age 3. La Sonya would use anything for a microphone. I remember she would stand in front of the mirror and sing and recite TV commercials. At the age of 5, La Sonya made her television debut in a short story for PBS television called “The Day in the Life of a Pencilâ€. La Sonya continued throughout her childhood years performing in theater, musicals and poetry recitals for holiday celebrations at school. La Sonya also joined the church choir.Singing in the church choir is where La Sonya‘s passion for music was really launched. At the age of 16, La Sonya joined “The Spirits of Truthâ€, a local gospel quintet. The group sang throughout the greater Detroit area at various church events and talent competitions. La Sonya performed with the group for four years until she left home to pursue college. It was in college that La Sonya took the role of “Michelle†in an off Broadway production of “Dream Girlsâ€. La Sonya took the role again in a production at the Metuchen Theater in New Jersey. After college, La Sonya went on to perform with The City Kids Reparatory Company. She performed with the likes of Demi Moore, Brandi, Brian McKnight, Herbie Hancock and Bruce Willis. At one of the performances, Bruce Willis approached La Sonya and said “You do a beautiful thing with your voice, you should never stop singing.â€Bruce’s words inspired La Sonya to write and record her own CD independently. The CD entitled “BlakGerl†which has sold 1,000 copies since its release, has been proclaimed to be a blend of funky music with socio-soul vibes. La Sonya received a write up in Billboard Magazine for her song “Endlesslyâ€.La Sonya Gunter is not only a singer, but an exceptional song writer. She won an award from the John Lennon songwriting contest for the song “As the Days Go byâ€. La Sonya has been featured on the soundtrack “Paid in Full†and two music compilations, “Neo-soulunited†and “DJ Jazzy Jeff’s Soul Mix Tapeâ€.La Sonya’s voice has a distinct flavor which contributes to her well rounded tones of a natural alto and contralto voice. It is understandable why this young lady has such uniqueness to her talent as a melodious singer. Her musical influences range from listening to Hank Williams and Johnny Cash with her grand dad, Roy Ayers and Teddy Pendergrass with her stepfather, Beethoven, Bach, and Hamilton Bohannon with me, her mother and finding Donny Hathaway, Sam Cooke and Sarah Vaughn on her own.So sit back & enjoy the ride. Take a listen to the music of this laid back, soft and gentle black beauty as she glides you into the reality of life.Sing La Sonya Sing!May the heavens open up a world of opportunities for you………With LoveMomma
