About Me

Hey get a copy of the orchestral score to PURITY, the indie film I directed.

Thanks to my KA Filmmakers listserv for this career-specific survey.
1) FILM YOU WISH YOU HAD MADE
SEVEN SAMURAI...but with an all-female cast.
2) FAVORITE MARLON BRANDO PERFORMANCE
STELLA!!! I've always depended on the kindness of strangers. Yo, you guessed it A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE.
3) COREY HAIM OR COREY FELDMAN
Whichever one was in THE LOST BOYS.
4) BEST SOUNDTRACK
Jo Hisaishi, MONONOKE NO HIME and of course George Shaw, PURITY ;)
5) WHICH WOULD YOU RATHER OWN: RUBY SLIPPERS (WIZARD OF OZ), ROSEBUD SLED (CITIZEN KANE). LIGHT SABER (STAR WARS), OR MYSTERIOUS SUITCASE (PULP FICTION)
Instant teleportation, plus Ruby Slippers are the only girl's item on the list. (Tho' there were some fierce female Jedi, hmm)
6) FAVORITE SILENT FILM
That I love to hate...BROKEN BLOSSOMS.
7) BEST BATMAN (MICHAEL KEATON, VAL KILMER, GEORGE CLOONEY, CHRISTIAN BALE)
Christian Bale. Broody as all get out.
8) FAVORITE FOREIGN-LANGUAGE FILM
AMELIE/CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON
9) GENE KELLY OR FRED ASTAIRE
Kelly was more manly so I'd have to go with Kelly.
10) GUILTY PLEASURE FILM
FASTER PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!
11) BEST SPORTS FILM
I hardly care about sports, but CHARIOTS OF FIRE rocked, and the doc THE GAME OF THEIR LIVES made me cry. Damn North Korean soccer team.
12) FAVORITE FILM FEATURING A STEREOTYPICAL ASIAN CHARACTER
THE WORLD OF SUZY WONG. Cray-gee!
13) MOST OVER-RATED FILMMAKER OR ACTOR
That's quite enough, Quentin Tarantino.
14) GODFATHER OR GODFATHER PT. II
GODFATHER, are you kidding?
15) BEST SEX SCENE
Gotta hand it to the Japanese: IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES. Pron disguised as art film. TAMPOPO a close second. I can never look at an egg in the same way again.
16) A FILM YOU WALKED OUT OF
Peter Greenaway's last film, can't even remember the name I liked his earlier stuff though (Film I should've walked out on? Matthew Barney's latest borefest but I was with 'high art' types...I fell asleep instead)
17) AN ACTOR YOU WOULD WATCH IN ANY FILM
Jet Li. I even liked that horrible UNLEASHED.
18) BEST FILM VILLAIN
The Wicked Witch of the West.
19) A BOOK THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADAPT INTO A FILM
Hayao Miyazaki's NAUSICAA as live action.
20) TRUFFAUT OR GODARD
Godard.
21) BEST JOHN HUGHES 1980S TEEN FILM
PRETTY IN PINK. A retarded laugh had no better spawning.
22) FILM GENRE YOU HATE
Horror. Of course that means I'm writing one. :)
23) BEST USE OF A PRE-EXISTING SONG/MUSIC IN A FILM
Entire soundtrack of MOULIN ROUGE. Brilliant!
24) FILM THAT ALWAYS MAKES YOU CRY
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Sucker punch to the gut.
25) ONE MOVIE SCENE YOU'D TAKE WITH YOU TO A DESERT ISLAND
CASABLANCA. "We'll always have Paris"

What Is Scarier?

Writing a horror film is instrumental in debunking several hoary cliches such as: Nothing to fear but fear itself. They want to see the blood and guts. The virgin is the last one left alive. I've bee...

Finding Out Who People Are vs Who They Say They Are

Whenever I meet a new person, say at a party or some other random happenchance, I always say to them "feel free to Google me."  And I do the same in return.  It's very rare to find someone t...
