THE VIBES (NYC) 1991-1994

THE VIBES (NYC) 1991-1994 "RIP"

About Me

The Vibes formed as soon as the break up of The Throbs was a fact with Danny Nordahl & Roger Ericson as the driving force. With a new drummer, Jeff West (The Waldos/Johnny Thunders) who joined the band after Ronnie Magri left, and a new singer, Jonny Tingle (from Mona Lisa) stepped in with 5 minutes notice to replace Ronnie Sweetheart after his sudden departure, the Vibes actually played a handful of shows under the name The Throbs to honor agreements made by the Throbs. The band were at that time playing the songs from The Throbs record "The Language of Thieves and Vagabonds", as well as material intended for the second, never to be recorded Throbs record...songs like The Hill, Rainbow, Burnt Roses & Let Me Come Inside had all been written as the band had been touring during the spring of 1991. Most of these songs had also been recorded as demos by the Throbs back in 1991, the songs were later recorded in different versions with different players with what some feel to the by far strongest versions (which later made up the never released The Vibes record "Beautiful Moonflower") were recorded by a line up that saw Scott Harris replacing Jeff West on drums. Scott provided the band with an extremely steady, very heavy backbone which for some had been the missing part to that point in time. No matter who's opinion you like better, the drumming of Scott Harris very much fit the new material in which at the time a rather prominent music attorney in NYC said; "I would be shocked if this does not get picked up by a major record label". If he indeed did find himself in a state of shock or not nobody knows for sure but clearly the musical climate at that time together with the "reputation" of the Throbs made certain that the record never was picked up.The unreleased "Beautiful Moonflower" record was recorded at Henry Hirsh's Water Front Studios in Hoboken, NJ and the recordings were completed and mixed in Los Angeles by Richard Wagner who together with Bob Ezrin had co-produced the Throbs record The Language Of Thieves and Vagabonds. Mr. Wagner, just like the rest of the team around the Vibes was quite surprised that these recordings never saw the light of day even though The Vibes who were unsigned also had a video entitled "Mudslide" which was played on MTV Europe's Headbanger's Ball in rotation...Despite the lack of interest from the record industry The Vibes went on to tour extensively up and down the East Coast for a couple of years before finally calling it a day in 1994.Scott Harris, Roger Ericson and Jonny Tingle kept getting together from time to time through the years that followed to finally, under the name Revolver NYC recorded five songs which to this day, like the recordings of the Vibes remain unreleased. The project also featured Fernando Rosario aka J.D. Malo on bass (who was originally in Smashed Gladys with Roger, Mike Monroe band, and Cycle Sluts From Hell). Revolver played one ill faithed show at New York's CBGB's before deciding not to push it any further. That show resulted in Jonny Tingle moving on to front Adharma, a NYC band which he led to great local success in the years that followed stopping just short of a major label record deal. The interest in Adharma, according to the A&R people who hung around at the time was mainly due to the strong vocals and the charisma supplied by Mr. Tingle.Roger Ericson decision to cut the strings on his red Les Paul and hang it on the wall for some indefinite rest was another result of that evening, finding himself dissilusioned with the music scene after having recorded what he felt was the by far strongest music he had been a part of putting together simply said; "I am not interested anymore".After leaving The Vibes in 93', Scott Harris went on to play with Baron Misuraca which would eventually lead to playing on Vasaria's debut record on Century Media Records in 97' and a tour in 98' with Das Ich. Scott decided to leave Vasaria in late 98' and co-founded the NYC alternative band ANGEL13 in 2000. After 5 years of pushing the band and due to musical differences; he decided to leave to start with his 2 brothers in law XRAYGUN. Check them out at www.myspace.com/xraygun .Danny went on to play bass in NY Loose, Motochrist and Faster Pussycat.
